movies/movie player crashing

I now have to use quicktime to view movies taken on my phone/saved to the pc
also if I try to right click the moview file all the icons dissapear from the desktop for a second, then reappear, but with no properties box showing

any ideas??

You haven't said what program you're using?
Do you have any codec packs installed? (these are bad..)
What type of file is it?

Need more info.

I use MPC-BE, awesome player, never skips a beat.

You could try MPC-BE or VLC.

It does if you use Windows 10 with the latest (installed by windows) AMD drivers!

Windows 10 doesn't count, beta with beta drivers.

its win 8.1 and movie files taken on an iphone

windows crashed last night and got a video tdr failure BSOD, got it running again with system restore
now in device manager it says there's a problem with the display adapter, tried reinstalling all drivers but no joy, can only select 1600 1200 res now, monitor is showing it as 1920 1200 tho!?
there's other 'funny things' it's doing now too
some folders only open for a few secs then crash before I have a chance to open anything
microsoft lifecam has stopped working too

going to try reinstalling windows i think

edit - just tried an old vid card and the resolution issue has gone now - but the movie files still crash explorer/media player
