Iam trying to get some of my films from my externall hard drive to my ps3.
Problems.

The ps3 says my hdd is empty but its got films. Is there any programs that will help me out or is t6here any special process to follow?

[EDIT] Amended it:

Ok firstly, the drive must be formatted as FAT32, secondly a correct file structure must be set up for the PS3 to recognise it, iirc you have to create a folder called 'Video' (without the '') and put your files in there. The PS3 will then look for video files within that folder, you can use any sort of file structure you want in the video folder as long as its within the folder the PS3 will recognize it.

Or, if all else fails, point at the external harddrive in the XMB and press triangle, then select 'view all'. This will show all folders on the harddrive whether the ps3 recognizes them or not.

It plays 99% of avi files, it's only really old versions of divx it doesn't like.

When you get into .mkv territory things get more complicated. Basically the PS3 is capable of playing some of the codecs that typically appear within .mkv files but not all. As a result of this the PS3 typically ignores mkv files an claims they won't play. However, a large portion of the time they are comprised of codecs the PS3 can play but the extention is upsetting it, a handy tool called mkv2vob (its free) will take mkv files and unpack them, reencode the video/audio tracks if necessary, then repackage it as a .vob file or a .mp4 file depending on which you tell it to.

If the file contains codecs that the PS3 can play the process of remuxing takes as little as 30 seconds, if it contains audio/video tracks it is unable to play the reencoding process can take several hours depending on the quality and length of the video and your own cpu.

I very much recommend mkv2vob, incredibly useful and effort free for sorting out your .mkvs.

Hey streeteh the Tringle button worked. I feel really dumb after that lol. Will mkv2vob covert files too or am i just asking silly questions again. Never really been into file converting so iam in the dark

Yeah, if the mkv file is in a format the PS3 doesn't like it will convert it automatically. Iirc it only works for mkv files though.

Oh and the triangle thing, my mum of all people was the one that worked that out for me after i had thrown a strop over it not seeing my video files. So humiliating. :(
