Don't quote me on this but i think thats wrong, you have to pay it back, although since they can't take it out of your wages you need to make voluntary contributions. I might be in this situation soon so i'd be interested to know myself.

You're "meant" to keep paying it off, but if the names you put down on the application form "don't know" where you are now living and thus unalbe to provide SLC with your new place of abode, after a certain period of time they do write it off (personally I thought it was 7 years, not 8).

I know of a few people who have taken advantage of this!

;) :p I might be.

One of my mate's has gone out to Australia with his family, and he's not expecting to be paying it off any time soon :)

As bad as the spongers that people are leaving the country because of in the first place.

Being money I'd have thought the government will hunt you down remorselessly to ensure they get their money back, and that there would be no loop holes.

Only one I was aware of was that it was wiped if you still hadn't paid it off by the age of 60 or something.

My impression was that it was 25 years, after that its wiped clean, but i'm pretty sure the moving abroad thing wont work, in the least i'd expect them to credit blacklist you in this country.

The SLC are bad but i really hope they're not THAT bad to let that loophole carry on.
