I have lived outside of the North for a while now and although I try my best to stay true to myself and hold my accent, I now find myself saying Lunch instead of Dinner.

I feel like I've let myself down :D.

So, To the people who have moved away from their hometown, what changes have you experienced? Do people notice?

Its going against everything I've ever believed in. Dinner ladies work in schools at that mid day meal time. So I figure it's dinner right? And don't say lunch ladies back at me! Haha.

I have a bit of pride in my home town so the transitions like this are a big deal to me :D
 
I'm from the North East originally and after 30 years there from birth I still never understood why people said Dinner instead of Lunch...or Tea instead of Dinner. WTF.
I always corrected people on a constant basis to annoy them but I was just 1 man so could not change an entire geographical areas dialect lol

Personally, I never liked the Geordie accent so while I can't disguise it fully I always just talk in a more neutral accent as best as I can.

I try to learn other languages - Japanese and now Icelandic but it still just sounds like a Geordie saying non-english words :(

Geordie plus deep voice doesn't make it easy for foreigners to understand me so still working on getting rid of as much of the accent as possible - failing miserably.
 
I moved from Glasgow to Bath when I was 13, and lost my Glaswegian accent within a year... now sound like a posh farmer :p

Moved to Birmingham about 4 years ago, and haven't really picked up the accent, planning to keep it that way!!

Oh, and it's lunch. You don't have a "dinner hour" or "dinner break" at work do you? :p

Were the people that served your food at school dinner ladies or lunch ladies?
 
my accent flicks all over the shop depending where I am. I am terrible for it and pick up other peoples bad habits pretty quickly.

and it is Breakfast/lunch/dinner
there is no other way to say it.
 
I've been in the West Midlands for 10 years this year and luckily I have no hint of the accent, the day that happens I'm going home!

Do you now say Barth or Baff ?? Can never understand people saying Barth when it's Bath - There's no R in Bath. :rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
My accent is all over the shop, having spent my childhood in Lancashire; Shropshire; Gwynedd and Wirral (notice the lack of "The" preceding the latter ;) ). Having spent the best part of 25 years in Hampshire, I don't sound as though I come from "up north" quite so much, but it is still there nonetheless.
 
I was born in Bolton but grew up in Norfolk (from the age of 2) and Bedfordshire. I have a very slight northern accent, probably picked up from my parents :)
 
For god sake...

If you have a sandwich at 1PM and a hot meal at 6PM then it is lunch and dinner.

If you have a hot meal at 1PM and a sandwich at 6PM then it is dinner and tea.
