As per thread title,

I have an external USB HD (Icybox + Samsung Spinpoint) and the mac won't let me alter any files inside or move data across.

How can I overcome this?

Thanks

That's your problem then...

OSX can read, but not write to NTFS volumes. Re-format it as HFS+ if you don't need to connect it to Windows boxen.

That's the thing I have 120GB of important data on it and the mac has 10GB that needs moving.

Can I partition the mac? Just to keep this data temporarly?

You didn't get a superdrive then. :(

Open up that icy box and stick a different disk in it. Format HFS+ if you only want it for the Mac, or FAT32 (but watch for partition size limits) if you need to share it.

Could you transfer the files you need over a network? ... then transfer them to the desired location at a later stage

I take it you don't have 120Gb on another machine somewhere? how much space does the Mac have?

Not got a friend with some free space? or a spare HDD?

If you have a PC, you can attatch the drive to that and move the files to it over the network. That's the only way to write to an NTFS disk from OSX.
