Hello forum.

I while back I threw all my spare HDDs into my plex server and made them appear as 1 using windows. I am now looking to make a new server but wonder if the spanned volume would appear on a new pc or if it is specific to that windows. It will be going from windows 7 to 10 aswell.
Windows is not and wont be installed on the volume.

Thanks

Lewis

I've successfully moved a spanned volume between machines - obviously all disks in the set need to be moved together and I seem to remember an 'import foreign disks' step in disk management was needed to get them recognised in the new machine. Assuming you've got robust backups of all your data it should be fine, but if you haven't then now is your chance to buy a big new drive or two and then use your current ones as an extra backup set...

A big drawback of spanned volumes is that a problem with a single drive can lose the contents of the whole volume. You might want to look at drivepool.

Thanks mate. I am going to be moving the data off of them soon. I'm already having trouble with the drives disappearing if data is written to them. Reading is fine. Still its a sign that I need to replace them.
