Moving files and apps to a new iMac

Hi,

I have a late 2012 iMac.

I'm hoping to buy a new iMac later this year.

I also have a time capsule which backs up my iMac.

Would the simplest way to transfer all my files and settings etc be to force a back up to my tc from my current iMac then set up the new Mac and restore the old iMac files to it from the tc?

I was then hoping to update it to the latest OS.

Would that work or is there a better way?
