Hello,

Got a 2003 server at site A that needs 3 shares moving to a 2008 server at site B.

The internet connection at both sites is terrible, 2Mb at site A and 6mb at site B. So copying the files over the network does not seem a good idea.

The total amount of data is 14Gb.

What's the best way to copy the 3 shares to an external USB hard drive and move them to the new server.

I need a process that copies the files and folders permissions to the USB hard drive and then copies over to the new server at site b.

I can recreate the shares on the new server at site B, its only 3 after all. Its the permissions on the files and folders that's important.

I was thinking to unshare the folders on the server and use something like robocopy to copy the files to the USB hard drive ?

Any advice/info would be great.

Thanks

Don't use robocopy for this. Use the Microsoft File Server Migration Tool- it's what it is designed for and can be downloaded for free.

10 mins to configure and will automate the entire process, including maintaining permissions, creating shares, and removing the old shares. You can even pre-stage the files so there's little to no downtime, or in your case, no worries with doing it over a slow network.

Another option is to save all the access control lists with cacls and take them with you, you can dump them to a .txt file if you wish and then move the share data and run cacls on the other server with a restore switch to reapply all the permissions.
