Moving from a P30 Pro Android back to iPhone - How to back everything up?

I've had a Huawei P30 Pro for a couple of years now and its been okay but I have decided now my contract is up to move back to an iPhone. Never really got on with Android having used Apple devices for the majority of time previously.

My question is this - given I'm moving from Android to iOS what would be the best strategy for backing everything up from the P30 prior to moving to the iPhone? In the main I want to keep:-

  • Photos/Videos (fairly straightforward, just copy them over to my PC?)
  • Messages - Texts and Messenger ones
  • WhatsApp chats - I have a number of these including a couple of work related ones so I'd like to backup everything including chat and media within each chat group
  • Contacts - straightforward enough I assume
Everything else app wise like social media and other apps I presume is just a case of installing on the iPhone and logging back in. I'm just not sure what the most straightforward way to grab all of the above is and port it back into the new phone?

Any advice would be very much appreciated :)
 
I literally just asked very similar in my thread two lines below yours ;)

Sounds like we're SOL regarding Whatsapp, but let me know if you get anywhere? I'm not too fussed about texts so don't think I'll bother trying that one...
 
If you have Google Photos on the phone already backing up, you can install the Google Photos app on the iPhone. It can also back up iPhone photos/videos too.

Contacts just sign in with your Google account, and set the Google account in the iPhone as the contact list provider.

Apple does provide an app to move some things including texts, you could give that a try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apple.movetoios
 
I'm happy to pay for a third party app or program that will achieve this if it can't be done on a cost free basis, so if anyone has any recommendations, fire away. Just want to get the WhatsApp data backed up, this seems like the only potential tricky part. When I moved from iPhone to Android years ago I did this and there was a way to do it via uploading the data to Google Drive and using something called Wazzap Migrator although my memory is a little sketchy. Not sure if that method only worked for iPhone>>>>Android though, perhaps not the other way round.
 
You cant do it, despite what you see online regarding Android to iPhone Whatsapp I have not seen or heard of one real world example of an Android to iOS backup. It just doesnt work as far as I know and we tried literally everything when work moved us to iPhones last year, to the point where our workplace actually sent the 100+ iPhones back as we talk to many of our suppliers on Whatsapp and it was a nightmare.

Lots of companies out there doing blatant false advertising then!!!

If it isn't possible to move the chats to an iPhone, is there a way to save them to a PC at all in some sort of format which would at least allow you to still read them later?

You can copy the WhatsApp folder on the phone but I'm not sure if you can read them. Photos and videos at least are viewable. This folder however can be used to restore WhatsApp on another Android phone.

Pretty sure you can export any chat via WhatsApp itself. Not sure what format it goes into, said something about an email attachment when I was looking.

Hi all,

Thanks for the 'heads up' - Kanpai :cool: Just a little update which may assist anyone else searching for this sort of info in the future. I used Wondershare Mobile Trans this morning and it worked very well. Bit of a faff deactivating/authorising WhatsApp on both phones with codes being sent and entered but eventually it did the business. I paid for the full featured version so I also backedup and transferred everything else such as photos, music, documents, text MMS messages. Cost was £36 for a years subscription but it saved a load of hassle. Transferred about 5 years of data in around 30 mins tops from start to finish.

And yes - it can handle Android to iPhone with no issues, you just connect both phones to your PC and download a desktop assistant then the old phone gets backed up and transfers everything across to the new phone. PErfect solution I reckon, if a little pricey :)
