Mrs. Feek has an iPhone 6s. It's fine, it does what she wants but I can tell it's getting a bit old.

I'm going to replace my Xs Max this year so I see three potential options.

Get a new battery put in mine and give her that. I'll get it done at an Apple store so it'll be done properly with an official Apple battery.

Sell or trade mine in and buy her an SE or an XR.

Of course, this isn't taking into account what will happen with the iPhone 12 is announced, an 11 might be worth considering as well, depending on the prices.

She's not bothered about the size. She's not bothered about either FaceID or TouchID.

What would be the preferred upgrade? She genuinely doesn't care what she has as long as she can do what she wants with it.

If your wife doesn’t care about any of the hardware variables, the best update is surely the cheapest one of putting a new battery in your XS Max (assuming it even needs one - I have a 6s at the moment and the battery is so awful even a degraded XS Max battery would be a huge improvement).

Myself and my Mrs went from iPhone 5S to an iPhone 10 XS and XR and it was a significant upgrade, particularly in camera and screen quality. I don't regret the upgrade at all, but given the cost not sure it was worth it truth be told. Still, it’s nice to be on a more recent phone.

New battery in XS for sure.
