(Apologies if this should be in the Apple Software / Mobiles section - i couldn't make up my mind!)

I'm going to jump ship and move from Android to iPhone and just have a few quick questions which i haven't seen addressed anywhere else. Appreciate it if someone could help out :D

1) I currently sync all my data (contacts/calendar etc) via Gmail, presumably the iPhone can do this with no issues, but are there any "hidden limitations" ? (random stuff like.... contact photos not working... issues with calendar items etc?)

2) Is there any advantage/point in migrating my stuff to the iCloud shizzle, if i'm already setup on Gmail? Are there any advantages?

3) I currently use an app (this one) to setup specific profiles on my Android phone (i.e. it changes the ringtones/alert tones, network connections, wallpapers, screen brightness etc). I'm assuming that the iPhone can't do this out of the box, but are there apps that can do that (probably a stupid question, but I thought i'd just check!)

4) Any other random things that anyone can think of, which might not be immediately obvious?

thanks in advance :D

1) Just setup gmail as an active sync account to m.google.com and sync your contacts and calendar that way, photos and all.

1) no issues, works well with active sync.
2) not really, no point if you have google set up
3) iphone doesn't have profiles as standard, there might be an app, no idea. Adding custom ringtones can be a bit of a faff.

Well I just switched from android to the iPhone this Saturday and it is so much better. Gmail is push as usual, contacts sync with no issues to Google as well and it carries the contact photos as well. To be honest its the same but without the random freezes, slow responsiveness every now and again but this time I can sync it with iTunes and play my music library where ever I go :)

What's the difference between doing that and choosing the GMail option in the "add new account" screen? Does that only sync email?

I wish that method worked seamlessly for me. Since the iPhone 3G I have had nothing but a total nightmare keeping my phones sync'd with my google calendar and contacts via this way.

Every now and again I would get a random popup box requesting my google password, which fails even if you enter the correct one. It is a very well known issue and apparently has been narrowed down to the way MS Exchange was implemented into iOS. There is no real fix to this either, even though heaps of folks have the problem. :(

I've gone through two iPhones, and an iPad with the same issue.

Hope it works for the OP though.

My google sync doesn't work either.

It synced initially and downloaded all my contacts etc but my gmail contacts haven't updated since the first sync.

I have been using gmail setup as the exchange server and have never had a problem. My wife had the same setup and now and again would get the password popup box. I googled for a fix, and eventually reset the gmail password to something different, re-entered the new password on the phone and no problems since, that was a few years ago now too.

That configures the account as IMAP. I've had no sync issues between two 3GS (one on iOS4 and one iOS5) and an iPad 2. I dont get random password popups either.
