Moving from "bridge" to DSLR, EOS 400D?

Likewise. moved from the same fuji bridge as previously mentioned to a Nikon D40 some years back and now onto a D90.
If you can afford it then deffinatly go for it imo.

Starting to have terrible thoughts that I always get at times like this....

"Get a better one now and it will last you for longer" etc etc.

So 450D is becoming a likely result of this enquiry now :p

just get the nifty, it holds it's price if you wanna sell on. Prime's are different, you can get some incredible small dof's if you want, and they make for some good portrait shots...

The nifty fifty is a great little lens, I love it:

All above at f1.8. Mine is quite sharp wide open and focuses quite quickly although a bit noisily :D

I went from a Minolta X700 35mm Film all manual camera to a Canon EOS 50E for a few years. Then I made that big jump to the other side and embraced digital SLR with a EOS 400D.
I have used it solid for almost 4 years and loved it. I have now got a EOS 7D which is truely an amazing camera.
As for Lens, try out a Sigma 17-70 DC macro as a standard len. much, much better tan the standard canon kit lens.

I use a 450d and my girlfriend uses the 400d, both great cameras. When i bought the nifty fifty i let her use it one day to take some shots of her sisters kids, now it's a fight to get it back from her most of the time. It's a great little lens for the price, just make sure you don't lend it to anyone or you'll have problems getting it back :D

Thanks for the info guys (Not meant in the sarcastic Jesus.jpg way, honest) I'm currently mulling the move to a DSLR and was debating buying either a Canon EOS 1000D or a Nikon D3000. I've used Nikon cameras in the past (compacts only mind) and always been impressed with them, but some of the shots here are making me lean more toward a Canon.

either would be a decent bet, I went for Canon as I preferred the feel of the body - I strongly suggest you go somewhere and try some it could help your decision

To be fair, you could get those shots from any entry-level DSLR these days. Go to a camera shop and grope a few bodies (camera bodies, mind ;)) and pick what you feel is best. I started off with a Nikon D80, simply because they felt much nicer to hold and it had a very nice viewfinder. Actually, a second hand D80 isn't much more than a 400D. I'd definitely go for that instead and get a 35mm f/1.8 AF-S (which is a damn sharp lens) as I feel that 50mm on a crop sensor is too narrow for general use. And you can still take good portraits with the 35mm:

That wasn't from my D80 though (got nicked), it's from my Fuji S5. However if you want to stick to Canon you could try looking for a used 30D as well...
