Hi guys,

Just a quick one if I may.

I'm getting shot of all my PC garbage and going Mac (don't let anyone from PC Games know ;)). To this end I shall be getting a console, most likely a 360 to satisfy my gaming needs!
I'm a bit edgy about switching because I love my fps's and whilst there are a number of nice titles for the 360, I'm a bit dubious about the change in controls. That is to say, moving from keyboard and mouse to a gamepad.
Can people who have made the switch from PC to Console give me some insight please?

Cheers

I was in the same boat. Played and loved fps games from Doom onwards. I said 'no way I'll ever get used to a controller, etc, etc.'.

Here I am now, had a 360 since launch, sold my PC and I've taken to the controller like a duck to water. In fact, I'd now go as far as saying I prefer it.

Buy a 360, get COD2 and you'll be set. This game feels so right with the controller and it's what I and I'm guessing a few others made the transission with. Get it now, get practicing and you'll be all set for GoW in a few weeks time.

gogogoogo

Let me just say to start off, you're making the right decision and will probably save yourself loads, as there is no need to spend £300 at a time to upgrade this thing. You plug the console in, set up a live account and play basically - you spend a lot more time playing the actual games. I'm sure most of my time used to be spent configuring (getting the right mouse sensitivity, gfx etc), reasearching errors, installing and patching etc games on the PC than i did actually playing them.

I used to play quake 3 arena totally hardcore about a year ago and would swear by the keyboard/mouse combo for fps games. I was especially weary as i never owned an original xbox either, so the switch from pc to console was a big jump. At first i nealry gave p on 360 fps due to the controller feeling weird, didn't feel like i got the same amount of precision and control. For instance, i even gave up playing king kong cause i found it too hard using the controller at first ( :o ).

Alas, as time when on the controller did grow on me and tbh right now using anything other than the 360 controller sounds silly.

TRAITOR!!!!
Get back on pc games ;)

Back OT:

You *could* probs use a keyboard and mouse on some games for the Xbox. I know it was possible on the ps2......

sold my pc gaming rig,, find consoles much more fun and accessible, played the upgrade game for too long, its become too much of a moneypit.

You'll have to try it and decide for yourself - there is no right or wrong answer to that question :)

Many people find FPS games fine with a gamepad. Others like myself hate it and have never got used to it. Which category you fall into, only you can say.

I moved from the pc scene a few months before the 360 launched, was a good move too as I don't regret it even now.

The change from a keyboard/rat to a controller felt like an immense change for me but it worked out better then I thought. The only FPS's I have here are CoD2 and Halo2 and they're both very easy to use the controller with. Granted precise, accurate aim's are obviously harder compared to a mouse but they can be done.

console fps is fun, especially multiplayer with mates round. pc fps is better if your competitive and like to get good, and better fps's come out for pc anyway. you will get used to control pad, but keyboard and mouse totally destroys it in everyway.

if you really only like fps, then pc is really the best option, though going console brings a lot more different genres of games to the table. eg. adventure, action, racing, beat em up, rpg etc. whereas i see pc is more like fps, mmorpg, rts

I agree that the PC is seemingly becoming quite specialized in the genres it does well. Quite depressing really. It's nice to have the wide variety of stuff that you get with the consoles. I'm looking forward to giving Sing Star and Guitar Hero a go on PS3 for example.

I find the controller a bit pants in some situations. I found veteran CoD2 incredibly difficult and was able to manage it much better with the keyboard mouse.

But I'm going down the same lines, too. PC is being dismantled and the Mac mini is my main computer now after about two months of indecisiveness. But as I'm going to uni, I think it's better to have the console so that all my new buddies can join in and have fun, too.

Have got an Xbox 360 sitting here and looking forward to getting PS3 also. I feel content that the arrival of HD consoles is enough to put my PC to bed once and for all. (At least the Mac's graphics should be OK to enable me to play Company of Heroes and Crysis in 2012.) ;)

Why not see if one of your mates has a 360 with a fps and have a blast on that and see how it feels to you.

Personally I prefer FPS now on my 360 compared to the PC. My preference changed when playing BF2:MC on the 360 compared to BF2 on the PC. The control system on the 360 really makes use of the buttons whereas I found I mushing the keyboard to get some actions to work on the pc version.

The only iffy bit on any console FPS is sniping.

The whole thing is iffy if you ask me... you can't move or aim as quickly or precisely as you can with a mouse.

A game like UT2004 and presumably the upcoming UT2007 would be rubbish with a pad, unless they completely dumb it down for consoles which I suppose is possible.

Yes thats your opinion I finding aiming quicker and easier in BF2:MC on the 360 than on BF2 for the pc. The tanks turrent swings round much quicker for a start.

However like your post this is my opinion. Some people will and some people won't agree thats why we have choice.

Some people seem have no problem making the switch. My brother went from PC gaming (mainly FPS) to the 360 and now he is sure the game controller is better.

I still play both PC and console games. I personally have never found a gamepad as good as keyboard+mouse. I've tried them all, having owned every console from the Megadrive all the way through to the 360. No console has ever manager to provide a control device I've found as accurate as a keyboard+mouse.

It doesn't stop me enjoying the games though. I still enjoy a blast on CoD2, PD Zero and many other FPS games on my 360. But at the back of my mind I'm usually still wishing for keyboard+Mouse controls.

I've never played BF2. Have you played UT2004? If you have played it to any sort of decent level then you will presumably agree that it would be impossible to play such a fast-paced 'twitch fps' with a gamepad :)

Definately agree. I used to play UT2004 online and the action was quite frankly manic! - I would not like to play that on a pad.

Although I expect there would still be some people who would prefer it on the pad.

To add I used to prefer playing quake 3 arena on the DC more than on the pc and I was pretty good.

The DC had a keyboard and mouse which you could use for Quake III didn't it? :D I'm coming round to the idea that they should have such peripherals for today's consoles, and then consoles would be on a true level playing field with PCs for games - of all genres.
