I am about to migrate across to Telewest very soon.

I have a Netgear ADSL modem, which I am guessing can't be used on a cable line (though I don't know if this is true or not??).

What other equipment would I instead need? Would a cable modem such as Buffalo Nfiniti Wireless-N Router 300Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Internet Gateway Router (WZR-G300N) (NW-037-BF) be ok?

We have USB and PCI cards (Netgear and other companies) that worked with the adsl router previously - would they work with the router suggested above?

Hi mate,

Your ADSL router won't be any good with cable (unless theres some new tech out since I last checked).

There are tons of cable routers out there so have a good look at whats available in your price range and check out their features.

The connection from the cable modem they supply will be RJ45 cable although some can connect with USB too.

You won't need any other equipment, you can still use your network card in your pc to connect to the router and/or the cable modem they supply.

Congrats on changing to Telewest. I love the service, far better than ADSL imo.

No probs

Ive been with them ever since they dug up my street about 9 years ago :)

I had no choice at my office but to put adsl in though as telewest was unavailable there. I much prefer cable though :) You have made a good choice.

Did they not give you a time and date for your install?

Rock on, Telewest are great :)

I'd recommend this router:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Cable_Routers.html#aNW_2d075_2dNG

Had it for about a month now and working flawlessly :)

The netgear one at the bottom? Do I plug it in as follows:

Wall socket ->cable modem supplied by Telewest ->router you suggested =>wireless....

Or should I go for the one 5th from bottom of the page Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router (NW-010-NG). We can't get our machines to connect faster than 54mbs, so our 108mbs ADSL router is actually wasted on us atm.

Yup, that's right.

Up to you really. I'm not sure what advantages the bottom one has over the other one, but it probalby won't make much difference to be honest.

You could do a lot worse than the WRT54GL and a third party firmware for the money, that would include QOS and a load of other stuff but it all depends on what you actually need.... and i've been with TW since day one on BBI as both customer and then later on staff (now back to customer). Simply put I wouldn't keep it if it wasn't worth it.

As for your install they will give you a time and a date for install, this can be anything from 3 days to (a very unlikley) 14 days depending on the time of year and area.

Being overly harsh the only large scale customer affecting issues over the last year have been minor, the email servers have been problematic for a few days at a time over the last year but a) I have hosted domain(s) with smtp setup anyway and b) downtime has been minimal. Periodically ('Student' season) some nodes can become over subscribed short term but this is usually resolved in a timely manner.

If you are ordering a 4mb or a 10mb internet from telewest they supply you with a free wireless router. Only catch is you need to stay with them for 12 months (but to begin with its a 12 month contract anyway, so it shouldnt be a problem)
Just thought I would point that out :)

I have ADSL router - would I not be able to substitute the cable one with the one I possess already. That is, use it as a router as opposed to a modem as well?

Cable doesn't use your phone line so the simple answer is no you can't use your ADSL Modem/Router as a cable router.* As stated it will make a difference, google a few reviews of the 614 and then google 614 problem and you'll see what i'm on about.

*You may be able to include it into your LAN as a switch/AP (if it's wireless) but that's not the same as using it as a WAN to LAN router.
