Hey there guys,

I have missed all the hype for the conroe and latest gear.

I currently have a 4800+ @ 2.8ghz, 2gb Ballistix, bfg 7800GTX all cooled by a HE120.3, Storm G4, Silverprop HL and an AquaExtreme 50Qz.

Im very happy with my system, it doesn't miss a beat and is nice and quick (im always the first player to join the BF2 servers at map change).

I only use the PC for Games, Browsing & porn (not necessarily in that order!) lol but I quite fancy a change as Ive has this for a while.

Will the upgrade to conroe, new RAM and mobo be a noticeable change?

What CPU would be best for my setup? 6600 or 6700? I'd be hoping for 3.5ghz (ish)?

I wouldn't of thought you'd notice too much of a difference in real terms tbh and definately wouldn't be worth the outlay imo.

If you have money to burn though and want the leading edge tech then by all means go ahead. With DX10 on the horizon though I'd recomend holding out until those cards are established and make the change then.

I only have an X2 4200+ @2.75Ghz and an X1800XT and that deals with everything on max at the resolutions I play at (1280x1024). So I'm not looking to upgrade for at least another 12 months or so. By that time Vista should be settled in and the second generation of DX10 should hopefully be available too. ;)

If you want better eye candy you might want to replace your graphics card and get a monitor that allows you to play at higher resolutions :)

I had a 4800x2, 2gb ocz pc3200, asus asli delux mobo up until yesterday, when I swapped it out for a e6600, 2gb geil dd2 pc6400 & the asus delux xfire board. I also use a X1900XT. I didnt overclock the 4800 and as you say it ran everything fine for me, but I had the oppertunity for basically a free upgrade to the conroe setup, so I went for it.

I setup the new kit last night, just using the stock cooler for now (I have a switech WC kit, not sure if I am going to re install this yet tho), didnt bother with AS5'in the stock cooler or the copper parts of the motherboard, I just wanted to get it going, so I could play WoW :) I can do that when I get a bit more free time.

The machine is all stock at the mo and it boots into windows a lot faster, multitask's faster, seems to have a lot less idle CPU usage (allthough this could be the re install), does a super pi about 2/3rds the speed faster than the old AMD rig, is about the same 3DMark06 score as before, but in games it is better.

I play WoW mainly on this pc, so its not a very demanding game, but I play it at the endgame level, so theres lots of players and NPC's on the screen at the same time, I play at 1600x1200, with everything maxed out, with as much AA and AF as it will let me. Before, my PC would hit the locked 60FPS (vsync on) about 70% of the time and perhaps drop to about 40fps when in a big old battle ,with like 60 or 70 models on the screen.

Last night I could not get it to drop below the capped 60FPS, with the new equipment installed. It wouldnt budge, even in the big cities, this is at stock :)

I'm glad I made the switch and the great thing is, its more than likely got loads of overclocking potential too!!!!!

Matt.

I made the switch coming from an opty 170 @ 2.8ghz DFI expert and G skill ram to my current conroe setup(see Sig)

I must say that I was suitablly impressed. However I do use my main rig as a workstation and do a lot of encoding and video etc...

So the perfromance gain running conroe @ 3.8ghz is a massive leap! :D

I also watercooled for the first time due to the high clocks I wanted to achieve.

It all depends on what you do with your system.
