Hallo :)

My new Samsung drive is on its way from OcUK today (woot!). Anyways as soon as I've fitted it I wanna move my entire flight simulator (FS9) installation to the new drive.

I plan to go the bog-standard Windows route using Windows Explorer:

Select folder to be moved>Edit>Move To Folder>Move

However Im under no illusions that all will go well  My FS9 installation is 107GB in size and the game has been modded extensively by 3rd-party addons. Will moving it in such a fashion preserve all the numerous associations needed by all these 3rd-party apps? (Of course I will move them to as required).

If any of you guys have moved your FS9 installation from an old drive to a new one and could share any advice then that would be awesome.

Thanx :)

i would possibly suggest installing fs9 on its own first of all, so that any reg hooks are in place, the overwrite it with the stuff you move over.

Well with so many addons and so many reg-entries I can't see it going to well. You may be lucky but I don't think everything will work.

I'd personally reinstall it all and add the customisations you want afterwards.

Thanks everyone for the input. Im dreading this but I think I gotta do it: Im gonna go for a fresh install of FS9 and all the trillions of addons for it. Before even starting Im gonna get all the CDs together so Im not scrambling for stuff. Of course some stuff like the AddOn Scenery folder and the Aircraft folder are not a big deal. Just copy em across from the old drive.

I will keep the old installation of FS9 on the old drive for a couple of months until the new one has stabilized and Im sure its working properly. Then I plan to scrub FS9 of the old one and use it as a dump for Acronis' images.

BTW I guess I have to "fool" the FS9 installer to install on the new drive because FS9 already exists on the old one? How would I do that...Im guessing by renaming the FS9.exe?

Oh dude this is gonna be a mission and a half :(

Should be worth it though :P

Do it, two options reinstall windows and start from scratch or uninstall FS9, defrag and reinstall FS9 and add-ons. If you want more advice ask here http://forums.avsim.net/ . Personally I would take the second option no matter how painful it is.

Yea I will do that. However I dont wanna touch the FS9 installation on the old drive....I will treat it as a backup - while I install a fresh FS9 on the *new* drive :)

And at last I have room for FSX as well which has been sitting on the shelf gathering dust cuz theres no room for it on the old HD...

Welp after posting this reply Im gonna power down, crack the case and install this cool new Samsung HD.

See ya'll later

This may be a slightly dopey idea, but from what I can gather FS9's drive DOES NOT have Windows installed upon it? If this is the case, then simply cut & paste to the same relative location on the new drive & swap the drive letters?
IE:
Old drive- D:\FS9
Copy this to new drive so E:\FS9
Finally change drive E: to drive D: using disk management, so FS9 remains at D:\FS9, but moves drives.
