I have a very small website that at the moment does nothing more than host my forum sig, a few php scripts and some files. Despite all of this my current host is so bad the most that I can get to run on the front page thanks to their rubbish support, is an embarrassing hello world page. So I want to move.

I know I can very easily set up a new webhost, but what happens to my domain? Its registered with my current webhost until 2008. If I go with another host, how do they go about wrestling control over DNS entries to their name servers? Also when it does expire, how easy is it to move the domain name to a new provider? Its not a popular name so I doubt its going to get hijacked when it does expire.

Ask them to alter the nameservers - if they won't, you can go straight to Nominet (though this will not be free), as the domain seems to be registered in your name :)

Alternatively you can transfer the domain to your new provider by asking H-U to change the IPS Tag, which essentially performs a registrar transfer - moving it totally away from H-U :)
