In my role of Executive Director of Entertainment within my household, I'm beginning to look at my options for getting the phone and broadband up and running as soon following my completion date.

Does anyone have any practical tips with regards to how to get this up and running as efficiently as possible? I understand the standard time period is around 2 weeks, but can I save any time by taking over the line rather than the current vendor cancelling altogether and me having to place a new order?

Not that it matters but I'd probably be going for Plusnet fibre, it's quite important we get the internet up and running as soon as possible as we both rely on it heavily for work.

+1 from me too, moving to a new home soon and want Internet as soon as I can get it installed.

Do I need to wait until I have the keys before I can ask them to look at installing it, or can I call up an ISP and ask them to install it on my line as soon as i'm up and running with the keys?

I believe when you exchange that's when you agree upon a date which is then typically 2 weeks until completion. As contracts have been exchanged it's a legally binding contract so very costly if someone pulls out. That's when you begin organizing these things but I'm unsure of the best way to actually go about it.

The engineer might have to visit your house so you need to be in it really. He definitely will for fibre. I suppose you could order it before you got the keys but it could be risky, the order might go through quicker than you expected and so he won't be able to gain access to the house.

I recommend you get your phone line from the same company as the broadband so they can do a simultaneous order.

As soon as you have a completion date place the order with Plusnet at the new house. You can specify you are moving to it and on what date and they will contact the existing provider and ask for then to take over the line. My vendor had placed a cease on their line which was a pain as there is nothing you can do about it but it all got reconnected (with no fee from Plusnet) and I got reconnected a few days after moving in. They will do all the donkey work for you.

I called on Thursday to place my order with BT, They are coming out Wednesday to install the line and internet at the new place. Just call and ask them if they can install it on a day that suits you, If not then try to find the next best date.
