Hi,

I am moving into a new place in a couple of weeks (i'm renting)

The current tenants move out on the 7th Aug. I know they have ADSL at the moment, no idea who with.

I move in on the 11th Aug.

How can i minimize the number of days without the internet?

I asked my ISP (i'm going to stick with adsl24, b/c of 1 month contract and dont have problems with them), and they said that the BT line will cease (because current tenants will tell them they dont want to pay any more), then I'll have to activate the line (which could take 5 days).

What is the best way to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible? Will the bt line be anything to do with the landlord?

BT take 14 days (so tell them 14 days before you move out) what they told me. They will book an engineer to come and test the line. (When I moved ranted places)

As soon as the line is active phone ISP. Then its how ever long that takes. O2 for me was 10 days. i was told it could be quicker if I didnt take my number.

ASDL may be quicker than LLU.

But phone BT NOW

Called them earlier.

If i "ordered" it in my name today, itll take 11 days... if i wait until tomorrow (because the current tennants end their service today), itll take 2 or 3 days.

So i guess 2 days + 5 days for adsl... 7 days... and i move in 9 days... so it should be just about right ;)

There are ways, I haven't tried in a while but I assume we can still do a simultaneous provide (a BT line with broadband activated at install time), but that always required an ISP who could be bothered with the hassle.

To answer your question - buy a 3G card

I did think of seeing if there was some kind of mobile way that gave fast speeds, but I have an iphone, unlimited data (until October) and i've got PDAnet running on it for wifi tethering. Its slowww though (0.2mbps) ;). That'll be my backup i think...

Simultaneous provides had a habit of going **** up and taking a lot of effort on the ISP's part to put right (IIRC usually by reordering the ADSL) :(

I once was relocating was with BT at the time, I called them a week before I was going to move to the new place, when I moved in everything was working fine even though they told me to wait until Monday (I moved in on Saturday and broadband and telephone worked just fine). Lucky me it seems.

If you have the contract signed and you know for sure you would be moving in there give the new provider a call 2 week up front and you should have minimum downtime.
