Right, Im currently with Plusnet and getting completely annoyed by by download speeds, traffic shaping, download restrictions etc etc so I want to move but Im not really sure what my situation is and whats the best way to go about it.

According to my account online, if I cancel I must pay for the deferred activation which totals £47 so Im looking for a way to avoid paying that if possible.

I originally signed up in June 2005, at which time they had no shaping and no restrictions. Am I right in thinking I can probably claim they have changed the terms and conditions of the original contract and am in my right for them to cancel the activation fee?

If so, whats the best way of going about this as I hear numerous bad stories about Plusnets customer services and no responses.

If they agree, what do I have to do next? Request a MAC key then sign up with a new supplier? How long does this take and what are the steps involved?

Also, any current recommendations for where to move to? On Plusnet premier so forking out about £22 a month, so there or there abouts on price.

Thanks,

Rob

I migrated away from plus.net in Jan 05 and I moved to Zen.
I've had 0% downtime and no speed issues at all.
Just get your mac code from plus.net and move away from that bunch of cowboys asap.

You may have had a case when they changed the T&C's, if it's more than 30 days ago (and afaik it's quite a bit more than that) you have little chance. You either pucker up and pay your £47 or sit it out for the remainder of the contract, you could fight your corner with them and see if they would be willing to meet you part way but i'd be surprised if they dropped it and gave you a MAC...

I thought you only had to pay for the defered activation if you wanted to cancel within the first year?
That's the way it used to be with plus.net.
In late 05 / early 06, they kept messing around with changes to their T&C's which is another reason I moved on.
Too be honest mate, if they insist on the £47.00, it'll be worth every penny so that you can move to a decent, reliable ISP.
Besides, BT either now own plus.net or they in are in the processes of buying them and we all know how good BT are at cocking things up :D

I was waiting till next month to cancel when Ive been paid, seems now they cant charge me for moving? Anyone know if this is correct?

Not quite. They can charge you for coming out of contract but they cant charge you for issueing the MAC itself which some ISP's do.

Cheers, makes sense. Just found out Plusnet are waiving deferred fees soon, most likely end of March so Ill sit tight to then and then cancel. Thanks for the input people.
