Moving master socket

hi all,

Trying to get more from my router and thought my master socket was in the living room (as looks and fits the description) but after some checking it’s been placed in the garage (who knows why) and not really a place I want my router.

What’s the best way to check the speed of the master socket in the garage compared to the living room one as if the same then no problem but if it’s faster I’ll want to try and move it.

Thanks

I wouldn't move the master socket - it's the demarcation point of BT support vs house wiring. When faced with similar I kept the modem next to the master socket, then ran ethernet to an internal switch that was more suitably located with APs hooked of this switch.

If that's a non starter, you can extended the socket using ethernet on the VDSL extension pins inside the master socket - lots of guides for doing this, but they may be deemed a competitor so I won't link directly.

Check the speed by carrying the router into the garage and plugging it in.

You aren't allowed to move a master socket (although if you do it properly they'll probably never know or care).

If the extension between the two sockets is done correctly any loss in speed should be too small to worry about.

Cheers Guys I’ll clear the garage and check the router in there and then compare with the one in the living room.

If the master socket is better I’ll just run the Ethernet as mentioned

Did you have power in your garage? If so, is the master socket within 5m of plug? If not, I believe they have to move it to within 5 metres so you may be able to to it moved inside the house. Don't think they can charge for it either.
