Moving my OS from a HDD to an SSD

It depends if you OS/hdd data is smaller than your new ssd so that it will fit onto it

You can simply clone your old hdd to your new ssd using the free version of macrium reflect

It'll come with Samsung Data Migration which should allow to transfer the data over for you (my housemate used it to transfer from his old SSD to his new Samsung). You'll probably have to re-activate Windows though.

I suppose if you have a backup drive that's large enough you could move your data off to that drive, uninstall your programs, and when you get to a small enough size migrate the drive over.

I don't thinkso, its just easier to do a fresh windows install onto your new ssd, then plug in your storage hdd and old hdd with old OS on it and drag/drop your files over to your new hdd and re install your games/programs ect

Remember to set SATA ports to ahci mode before windows install, after windows install then install latest Intel rapid storage drivers to improve speeds slightly further

I did a similar thing with Windows Vista recently. I installed the O/S and all the Updates including SP2, Various Uttilities like my OfficeSuite. I use Windows Mail so I imorted All my Emails etc. then My Itunes. That took up the most space. I resized the VOlume using Disk manager in windows Activated Windows. I then did a backup using Acronis TruImage. I still had to reduce it more without losing content. For this I used Disk Director because would reduce the size even further even without a Swap file. I Backed up that partition Shut down and installed the SSD. I restored the Image to the SSD and rebooted. I had a fully activated windows with a backup on another Hard disk.
Obviously I still had to caretaking to do, so I moved my Music folder to another HD by right clicking on it and basically telling it where I wanted it. Saves a lot of time doing it this way incase you wish to go back to a larger format at anytime. I actually saved 20GB on my SSD by moving my iTunes purchases to another disk. It is all good fun tinkering with windows file handling and path. In windows 7 you may have to do some of the basic device management in Admin mode. I did nstall the OS in AHCI mode and it is really quick and I have only a SATA II SSD as a boot drive. My Windows 7 is much too large to install on a small SSD. If you enjoy tinkering like I do then have fun.
