now, the audiolab 8000A is a serious second hand bargain. i've had mine years and i'm really fond of it, but i fancy a change, and since it needs its RCAs replacing soonish, now may well be the time.

I dont buy new audio kit, i generally quite like my sound as it is, aside from the obvious 8000S, 8000C/P combos can anyone think of anything else tasty?

rest of the system is a meridian 200 series Transport/Dac and Linn Index 2 speakers...

different brands have different sounds, so you need find one you like.... which means having a few demo's...
Oh and you might want to replace those Index 2's ..... A natural replacement would be the Keilidh...

What's your budget ?
Perhaps a Naim pre power..... Or a Linn Kolector or kairn +LK140's then if went for newer Linn speakers you could later go active......

i was thinking of putting the ceiling around 300 s/h, and i dont mind older kit, 90s etc - prefer an integrated for racking reasons, but a slim pre-power could fit

necro time

i just got hold of a Harman/Kardon HK650. I like it a lot. it's not massively better than the 8000A, just different in a few nice ways

I've always found that Naim pre-power amps work very well with Meridian and Linn speakers..

I used to have a Meridian 500 series transport & DAC and worked great with Naim. I also had a demo with Linn Keilidh speakers and was impressed.

(sorry just saw your budget. Naim integrated might still be an option?)
