I feel my time has come with these, lovely headphone for certain types of music but I need something warmer with better bass.

The dilemma is whether to just "downgrade" to 650's, and even the x2's have taken my fancy.

If I could warrant it I'd probably try the LCD-2's but I'm after one of those ultrawide gsync monitors this month so don't want to blow too much at once.

I bloody hate the HD700's tuning but the driver it's self is technically good. I think the HD650 is on par with with it from a technical standpoint but it has a more natural sound so I think you'd like them if you like a smoother response.

I don't think the LCD-2 are really an upgrade over the HD650 apart from bass texture, extension and impact. If you want something a bit cheaper (£499) I really love my Nighthawks. They remind me a bit like the old Denon D7000 but improved in all areas with a more natural sound to them.

The reason I like them so much is because they are different from all the headphones out there. Some people hate them, because they are scared of different. They can sound overly warm on unresolving equipment, but have a good tonal balance with some of the best bass you will find. I think the are about on par with the LCD-2 but just different, nothing sounds like the Nighthawk.

Having owned the Nighthawk twice, the second time I was a bit worried about having it as my one and only..because it doesn't really boost anything so it can sound a little less exciting compared to something like the Fostex TH900 - but man! these are fun in their own right. When I devoted time to it, it sounds fairly natural, it's when you start comparing the Nighthawk to other headphones when it makes you think is this really what I want because of Skylar Grays refusal to tune them like the rest which all pretty much have a boosted something up top.

Sometimes the vocals can sound a little distant compared to the HD650 but my god, the tonality of the NH is really stunning! liquid, smooth, effortless, golden is what I'd describe the sound as, they will keep me going until a HD650 successor.

Problem with Audeze is the QC is awful, things like rattling drivers, failings are a bit too common, it's a shame because they sound great! You could also try some of the T50RP mods like the Alpha Dogs, ZMF, Paradox etc - These are closed so keep that in mind.

I think before recommending anything, it'll be essential to know what you are pairing the HD700 with.

Refining the sound sig of a headphone and completely switching the sound sig to another set of can are two totally different approach.

Not sure, the treble doesn't affect me like it does others on the HD700, the O2/ODAC is a neutral/balanced/dry combo I thought. I could probably get a tube amp/dac to warm them up but I'd still be lacking the bass extension I want.

doesn't this combo emphasize treble ? last thing you need on hd700's

The gain op amp in the O2 is known for being a bit bright on the treble but somewhat tamed by the 4556 buffer. Don't have a lot of experience with that particular pairing though to know how well they work together compared to other options.

Did you get new headphones?
I use hd700 from my pc. I am using a Graham slee ultra linear amp and find that it added to the bass. Now i can eq 6db into the bass and these headphones respond great. I wouldn't normally eq but these phones hooked up to this amp can take it and not suffer.
For reference i have used fiio e10k, E9, ak jr, necosoundlab v4 amps. All drove the hd700 to the sound levels i require, but when i eq'd the sound quality would suffer. Also the graham slee made the sound more full, more bass, not as harsh as the others...

I have the H700 as well, and yes I did find it a bit harsh sounding with my STX and sounded a bit "dry" and with some "spikes"...it took me using a Schiit Lyr2 to make it smoother sounding.

But even with that, it doesn't change the fact that it doesn't have great bass extension...but that's what my X1, MA900 and 1ABT is for :p
