Moving out - Budget planning help

On top of the food - you might possbly factor in the following per month (like we had to as a couple)

Toilet Rolls £6.00
Deodorant £3.00
Shampoo £1.50
Kitchen Rolls £2.00
Washing Up Liquid £1.00
Dishwasher Tablets £3.00
Fabric Conditioner £2.00
Bleach £1.50
Shower Gel £1.50
Toothpaste £1.50
Bin Bags £1.00
Kitchen Wipes £1.00
Tissues £1.00
Vitamins £3.00

Beer £50
Wine £10

This alone is nearly £90 a month (even before any food) - and that's without any male grooming stuff (razors/gels), womens (personal) items or smelly / preening things.

Believe me - it all adds up - and an it doesn't take long before you are speding £80 or £120 a week for a normal (food) shop - even though there isn't much food in it. You will be out a fortune in bread/milk and the basics if you want a normal life.......And as a couple or sharing with someone in your own place - you will be using double the amount you are used too.

And once the kids come - well - thats another story.

You've also left out car Maintenance and tax - which to an average person would be about £300 a year.

Gas, electric and water costs will all depend on what sort of place you are moving into. Is it a new build or an older property.

Looks like an older property, 80's maybe, will get a pic up in a bit :)

Maybe a bit much for 2 18 year old guys, but no point scrimping in my opinion :)

I think we've determined you can afford it, but you don't have as much spare cash as you thought. Go for it, and keep track of the costs- then tell us what it actually costs :)

As I am extremely sad, I keep a record of what I spend each month at the supermarket (Asda mainly). This will include house hold goods as well as food / drink etc.

April £110.59
May £97.28
June £63.82
July £162.54
August £132.59
Sept £108.32
Oct £125.15
Nov £135.92
Dec £87.48

I live on my own (aww :( ) and cook meals rather than buy pre-made for the majority of the time. I do a lot of bulk purchases of things and cook them down into portions and freeze them, which I think helps.

I am partial to a nice takeaway which isn't reflected in the data above :D

I'll also add that I buy lunch 5 days a week at the work canteen usually, which is an additional expense not included above.
