I am about to swap out my 14900KS this week for a 9850X3D with the asus rog strix X870E - E gaming motherboard, this will be replacing my asus rog strix Z790-E gaming motherboard. Google tells me that the best way to proceed is with a clean install of windows which i'd rather not do. ive done quite a few motherboard swaps without reinstalling windows 11 without a problem so what would your advice be ? has anyone else here changed from intel to amd chipsets without a fresh install of windows ? Ive not owned an AMD processor since 2007, should be an interesting change.

I did the same last year when 9800x3d launched from a KS. I just put the nvme in, uninstalled intel ME and installed amd chipsets. Was fine.

I would uninstall any software that is reliant on existing hardware, or may be configured to use it (e.g. wifi apps, motherboard software/utilities). Drivers should sort themselves out.

Yep. Right before the swap I'd be straight into Programs & Features and uninstalling any drivers then into Device Manager and removing any remnants of anything "intel" related. Shutdown, swap over, and Windows should then put the MS basics back on for the components. Probably then need to reboot again. Then finally install AMD chipset drivers. Bosh. :)

Thanks for that guys, its now likely i'll do the same. i forgot to mention that i'll be using the same ram, i did plan on buying some expo ram but you'll already know why i haven't so i'll be installing the ram im using which only has xmp profiles ? to run at 7200mhz, this should be fine if clocking it down to 6000mhz ?

Its been tested to run stable at 6000mhz cas 30 on this motherboard so perhaps ive answered my own question there. thanks for the feedback its been most helpful.

Just drop you ssd into the new system and install the amd chipset drives
Let windows run updates and you should be all good
This. Windows these days handles drastically new hardware changes extremely well, but as a precaution, just uninstall everything to do with your motherboard and then replace the hardware.

I’ve gone from Intel to AM4 and then AM5 on the same install without any issues.

changing boards will make any current os licences invalid unless you have a ms account then you can log in and go through the process to reactivate it, as with not reinstalling windows after moving from intel to AMD, its not recommended as Intel drivers can cause mayhem with AMD, by all means try it but if you get crashing or any weird behaviour, a reinstall would fix it 100%, check game performance if you get a lot lower than the average that’s a sign you need to reinstall to

also it being a x3d upgrade i would advise a reinstall so the core parking features work in the os, i had to install windows again going from a 9800x3d to a 9950x3d as when i launched games on the 16 core the x3d side wasn’t being used which is not how its meant to be

I went 2500k to Ryzen 1700 on W10, no issues... I'd be less certain on W11, but only becuase installing the monthly update is a risk in itself, even on the same platform :P
If your key is linked to MS account you should be fine for activation.

When I later had some issues (very specific issues with one game) after multiple CPU and motherboard changes on AMD: 1700 >3700X > 5950X and x370 > x570, I just did a reinstall via 'reset Windows' in the settings menu and it's been fine since.
As above though, the x3D part may benefit from a reisntall to get it working as intended (as I would also expect with Intel P/E core split, I just went from straight hyperthreaded cores to straight SMT on AMD)
