Hello all!

I'm looking to upgrade my relatively outdated PC and move over to something new. I recently bought the Oculus Rift S for Christmas for my brother, though my current PC can't use it, but I'd love to be able to use it when he's not.

My current PC specs are:
  • i5-2500K CPU @3.30 GHz
  • ASUS P8Z68-V LX Motherboard
  • 6GB RAM
  • Nvidia MSI GTX 960
  • TX650 Power Supply
  • 1TB HDD and 250GB Samsung SSD
  • Titan Fenrir Cooler
Please note that my motherboard is either not very good/broken as whenever I install more than 6GB RAM into it, the PC will BSOD continuously. Additionally, half of the USB ports were never installed into this mobo (hence why I'm eager to get a new build entirely).

I am currently looking at the OcUK Gaming Firefly Essential - Intel Core i5 9400F, GeForce RTX 2060 Super VR-ready rig that Overclockers has. According to the website, it has the following specs:

  • Kolink Nimbus Digital RGB Tower with Glass Side Panel - Black
  • 500W 80Plus Rated PSU
  • Intel Core i5 9400F Six Core Thread Processor
  • Asus B360 DDR4 Motherboard
  • Intel CPU Cooler
  • Up to 32GB DDR4 2666MHz Dual Channel RGB Kit
  • 240GB Solid State Drive
  • Seagate 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB Graphics Card

However, I would be swapping some things out for the higher-level options:
  • Kolink Stronghold Midi Tower Gaming Case
  • Intel Core i5-9600KF 3.7GHz (4.6GHz Boost)
  • Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB)
  • Asus GeForce RTX 2070 Dual Evo 8192MB (+1000 PSU upgrade).
This comes to a total of £864.97. I do not need a HDD/SSD or a Windows license as I will be taking these from my current PC and swapping them across.

I am just a little concerned as I can't find details on the motherboard that's listed, nor the CPU cooler (since it just says CPU cooler).

The main questions I'd love to ask is are these specs with the upgrade options I have selected okay? Is it okay to order without a HDD/SDD? Are there better options available to me? My budget is anywhere up to a total of £1,100.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you, have a great new year!

To be honest if you have a budget upto £1100 Id go the Ryzen route, Comparing the 9600KF to the Ryzen 3600 your getting double the amount of threads with AMD so your already getting more for your money

Will you be building it yourself if you order the parts? Or getting OCUK to build?

I'd happily attempt building it myself! I just wasn't sure on what parts (etc.) to get, hence the pre-made selection.

I'm sure you'll get a few build specs posted on here from other members, they're all very helpful... What monitor are you using?

I've got a dual-monitor set up consisting of the Samsung SyncMaster S22B350 (main monitor) and a flat panel Dell Monitor (which I'm not sure of the model, but it's only for music/chat windows anyhow).

Ive used the budget of £1000 for all the components you need minus th SSD or HDD you already have....

Ive gone for the Ryzen 3700x as it fits in the budget well, The 5700XT is a steal at £375, compared to the 2070 its a tad faster, every little helps ;) You could go a completely different route and go for Ryzen 3600/x and go for an even beef-ier GPU but that will probably be the wrong choice tbh as youll get better benefit having more CPU cores for the money.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £931.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

This is honestly perfect and exactly what I was looking for! I really appreciate the help, I've been stuck so far in the past I'm used to Nvidia and Intel haha.

I was wondering if you could suggest a CPU cooler to go along with this? My current one is not holding up as well and I'm worried it won't be good enough for the new kit.

You may want to change a few parts to suite your 'taste' but that's a rough guide for you to work with,

Gigabyte is a brilliant bran to go for if your based in the UK as they have a UK Based RMA service so turn around is really quick compared to others that need to be sent back to other countries... If your looking at Air cooling then the Cryorig-h7 has had plenty of good reviews, the do another version which has a 140mm cooling fan.

Youll need to also choose a case but I always leave that down to the buyer as its your own taste that counts

Brilliant! Thank you so much!

I'll do a little bit of research into options but I think the parts you've mentioned look great, so I'll probably go for those haha. I'll probably try use the same case I have since it's a good size and all. Thank you again ever so much, I really appreciate all the help!

No worries, do keep popping back as I'm sure others will spec something that will be a little different to mine
