Im currently on ADSL Max (UKFSN) and get quite good speeds, I have obtained my MAC code and will be starting off the process in the next few days.

Im going to be starting off with a BeBOX but will after about a week or two but purchasing a Netgear DG834GT ADSL 2+ Router.

Whats the process in which has to be carried out to optimise the connection? Do i need to contact the ISP and get them to do something their end?

I never contacted them, just used the DGTeam firmware to tune my SNR target margin to get the best sync speeds possible

You might want to ask them to set you to fastpath...depending on your line quality.

What are your current line stats?

Also, it may be cheaper to buy a sky-branded Netgear DG834GT from an auction site and then flash it to the DGTeam firmware (I paid £11 for mine).

What kind of broad performance increases can you expect from this tweek ?

I appreciate that there are a lot of variables involved in this

Do you mean from switching to fastpath?

If so, it can vary..but on a very good line it can make ~2mbit or more difference.

If you mean from using the GT router + DGTeam firmware...Once again, it can vary...but the main advantages are slightly faster sync speeds, improved stability and less problems with games (e.g. TF2 with the o2/bebox..you need to mess with it to get it working).

Sniper Wolf, sorry to go slightly OT but if you consider O2 instead of Be* I can set you up with a discount as discussed in this thread.

That thread is probably worth a read anyway for peoples views on alternative routers.

Quick question for you z0mbi3 - are you happy with the amount of people that are coming your way? I notice you seem to be somewhat deluged :p

Also, is there a time coming up where you won't/can't offer this discount anymore? I know quite a few people who're interested and haven't yet got round to emailing you...

I think it's running up to November so there's plenty of time. It's definitely not ending any time soon that's for sure.

I've also started creating some half useful rules for outlook so I can keep track of where I am with who more easily :D

Perfectly happy for them to keep on coming.

Hmm thats interesting, Samknows reports that I should get around 6-8mb off the 20mb line from O2 so I any uplift on that will be good. Once live then I may look into that. I am not a big uploader by any stretch of the imagination so a sacrifice in upstream won't be a problem

Thats all good news to my ears. Anything that gets in the way of my pings when Im gaming better watch out

If you're interested in pings then definitely go for fastpath. On rubbish lines it'll mean you'll lose some download speed, but the improvement in gaming pings is around the ten mark (e.g. 17 rather than 27 in some TF2 games recently).

Unfortunately, that 6-8mbit guess by samknows is very much just a guess. You could get dramatically worse or (less likely) better speeds than that :/

When you go "fastpath" no error correction happens and the packets are forwarded directly. This means things are happening faster, and thus ping goes down. However, a poor line (which depends on errors being corrected) will fail all together since retransmission will be necessary all the time.

PS: This is a very abstract view of whats going on just to get the point across :)

My line stats are below:

Connection Speed : 7552 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation : 21 db 5 db
Noise Margin : 9 db 28 db

Wish i found this post from you before i ordered it :( done it this morning, I have given them my MAC code and they have placed the order but havnt given any direct debit details as yet.

Reason im going with Be is because of the free Static IP and no 12month contract, i didnt realise how similar O2 and BE were.

Sorry Sniper Wolf, nothing I can do for you if you're already registered.

That's a bit misleading. It's one and the same network.

That's OK mate, I didnt think there would be, wish I seen your kind offer before hand! Never mind!
