Moving to Cheshire

Cheshire is a suitably vague area. Semi-rural, but near to shops, detached but under £200k.

Hmmm.

Top end of budget (190 to 200k) will get a 3 bed detached in the Crewe area but it's not going to be rural or semi-rural. Like any town it has good and bad areas - Willaston and Wistaston are fine IMO. Good train links from the station - Liverpool & Manchester are both under 40 minutes on the fast trains. Chester is 20 to 25 minute.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest culcheth but you’d probably still need to up the budget a bit.

I used to Live in Culcheth and agree with your sentiment. I moved there after Leigh and Lowton, possibly more affordable areas for the OP.

Thanks Paradigm, I'll look into Moorlands. Is moorlands an area? I'll type it on rightmove
Staffordshire Moorlands is a district council area directly to the south of the Cheshire East border (border towns are Macclesfield and Congleton in Cheshire East and Biddulph and Leek in Staffordshire Moorlands). House prices are a good 30%+ cheaper over the border. You might still have to concede with a semi rather than detached if you want something newer and requiring little to no work.

For reference, our 3 bed semi was £150k 18 months ago, we were looking at £220-250k to get something similar in Macclesfield.

Sounds like a relationship breakup (or witness to a crime) and 150-200k is the expected amount left over to buy a property once the current one is sold off and debts paid off, can't think of any other reasons why you'd want to move your kids half way across the country to an area you don't know with no jobs lined up and taking the youngest away from their apprenticeship. It would be more logical to wait until the youngest has hit a milestone with their qualifications or move into rented up north to begin with to explore where you want to be and what work you can get.

Does sound odd. Do the sons get a say in this? At 19 and 21 you'd have a pretty solid group of friends. Shame to rip them away from that.

There are lots of nice areas in Cheshire. Cheshire is a fairly big area.

Those suggesting Cultcheth though :/ although compared to Leigh, Wigan, Lowton then Cultcheth would be heaven!

Culcheth is pretty nice based on the budget given, Croft nicer still. Lowton isn’t great, Leigh has some nice houses around the place but the town is an utter dump.

We moved from Berkshire (city jobs) to Cheshire 5 years ago. Decision due to wanting proximity to family due to starting a family - we'd spent 10 years in the city so had ticked that box and developed careers.

We started off in a barn conversion in Sandbach, and more recently bought a rennovation project just outside Knutsford. I can recommend both. Location depends on job situation, and required proximity to Manchester etc (we both work there). West is very rural and not a lot is going on, huge variation in price depending on the specific location you're looking at. Can be a bit too quiet/cliquey - not sure I would want to take teenagers out of London, and move there. The East (of the M6), has excellent access to Manchester, and there is a lot to do (we have a 1 and 3 year old and they are constantly at farms, out in the countryside, in the towns and villiages etc). Much less cliquey, and more vibrant. We can be in the Peaks within 15 minutes. Walking, mountain biking etc, or in the Manchester city center bars in 20-25. It's got a lot going for it. Anywhere near the golden triangle might be a struggle with a 200K budget.

Personally, not a fan of the north of Cheshire (toward the Wirral\Liverpool, Warrington, and towards stockport) - it's not really Cheshire IMO, at least, doesn't have the same vibe. Feels like City surburbia\typical metropolitian county to me.

We've viewed properties pretty much throughout the county.

Move to Moss Side in Manchester, your £150-200k should get you a mansion there, you could also have enough money left over to not have to work so you could lounge by the pool all day soaking up the sun.

Although this is obviously tongue in cheek, Moss Side isn't what it used to be. We sold our tiny 45m2 2 bedroom semi detached house in moss side for £140k last year.

For the OP, I think you will have to take a step back and re-evaluate what you are doing, why, and your expectations. The North is cheap but it's not *that* cheap.

Cheshire have areas with huge property prices, Bramhall, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Hale Barns, Prestbury etcetera. Whilst still desirable areas to celebrities and professional footballers many of these towns and villages have seen the Cheshire gentry move away because of this influx. In fact when I first moved from Cheshire to north Shropshire one of the first people I met were an elderly couple of obvious but restrained wealth from Alderley Edge who had also just moved here because a "professional footballer and his trophy wife had moved in next to their property and demonstrated visually and aurally how wealth doesn't buy good taste or tolerable manners". Many lovely Cheshire farm houses, especially around Prestbury and Alderley Edge have been raised to the ground only for some tasteless gin and party palace to be erected spoiling the whole nature of the villages.

Rural Cheshire prices remain extremely buoyant, those properties still in Cheshire but near the less desirable areas like Stockport and Manchester still offer affordable housing, but if a semi rural idyll is your goal I would look towards Shropshire or Staffordshire for more reasonable prices. Good luck, still a great county with some really nice people and ways of life.

North Staffordshire / Staffordshire Moorlands area would be my bet, Cheshire is expensive and OC/UK is in North Staffordshire, what more reason do you need? :p

Rightly or wrongly I am just not a fan of Culcheth. Croft, you are onto more of a winner for a nicer area. I know what you mean about the houses around Leigh but my wife currently works in Leigh I would never move there.

Yep, as a town Leigh is a dump. Clearly it had money at some point, as there are nice houses here and there, but the town itself is done. Game over.
