Hey guys, will be moving to Derby for work some time in the next month or so, and I'm scouting out somewhere to live!

Where are the nice areas, and the not so nice areas?

I'll likely be renting but I'm seriously considering buying under the Help To Buy scheme, can get quite a lot for your money this way up north!

Any help would be appreciated!

Where are you working, in the centre? There's plenty of nice areas on the outskirts unless you really need to be near to the centre (Allestree etc).

Avoid Normanton and Chaddesden :p.

Ah, Alvaston is meant to be a bit rough also :(.

Littleover, Mickleover, Darley Abbey are ~4 miles away and very nice. Allestree is ~7 miles. All are suburban but probably won't be cheap either.

Depends how much of a commute you want :).

Yeah, 4 miles isn't too bad. Don't have my driving license so that's going be done ASAP! Might take up cycling in the mean time though, or traipse around on the bus which I can't imagine will be straight forward!

Rolls Royce on Raynesway?

A few of the people I work with there are based in Chellaston which is alright, there's an estate just of A50 J3 which is nice I've heard, and my colleagues used to cycle in 20-30mins.

That's the one :)

Aha, thanks, will have a look!

Now it makes sense seeing your SC clearance page too! I've just completed over a year there as a design engineer for my degree, and I've got a job to return to there after uni in July.

If you have any questions about the place / facilities, or anything at all then send me a message in trust :)

Aw, I want a job at Rolls Royce :(. My Dad used to work for them in the 70's as an Engineer and always regretted leaving.

Is there much of a call for software developers there?

Pretty sure there will be. Only way to find out is to go and look on their website!

are you renting?

i know fair a few people working in raynesway that lives in nottingham. they say there are more things to do at night. ;)

there are some nice new-ish development near the bottom of pride park. (without going onto london road.)

if you dont mind forking out abit more, the north/north west are much better area. towrds north you have little chester, darley abbey, a lot of the chief engineers in raynesway live in Allestree.

towards north west, ashborune road/ friar gate and area near the university are also good. a lot of the young professional hangs around there. littleover and mickleover are next on the list, but peak hours travel is nightmare especially if you going towards raynesway. there are also some new development near the bottom of chellaston which are quite nice. but the houses are quite big, might not be your need.

Looking at renting, for at least 6 months anyway. But strongly considering buying as with the help to buy scheme, a 5% deposit is very tempting! Especially with the house prices in Derbyshire.

I did consider Nottingham, but might be a mission commuting!

When commuting from nottingham isn't the greatest idea, the A453 is an absolute nightmare at rush hour, getting in and out.

Almost everyone I know who commutes there from Nottingham uses the A52, but I suppose it depends which area of Nottingham you live in. My team leader commutes in from Nottingham and it took him around 30 mins, with the odd bad day, just like anywhere.

As said above, a lot of people commute from Nottingham as it tends to be more lively. The benefit of Raynesway is it's close to good access route, so you avoid the majority of traffic if you get in early (most people start 8am +- 15 mins)

I'm looking at living in Nottingham after a few months of starting my permanent position there.

It depends on your personal situation, for myself as I'm quite young, I want to live somewhere a bit more livelier than Derby, and the commute from Nottingham to Derby is going to be much less thatn the 50 mile / 1 hour commute from nr Crewe. My friend from university (who also took a placement with me and has a permanent job waiting) is also doing the same, so it's likely that we will house share.

I commute from Birmingham every morning! :o

But I don't head down to Raynesway much too strict/secure, stick to D-Site :p, Nottingham to Derby is only 25 minutes on the train I think Birmingham to Derby is 37 minutes, and could get a cab from the station, but if you're actual RR (not a contractor), I don't think they expense taxi travel?
