lo folks

well..me and the GF have been living together a while now, so our plans to move to dublin are starting...she's from dublin and so are all of her family/friends. being a geek i have no friends, hate my work colleagues and im not all that fond of my family tbh, so im happy to go...

aaaanyway...

i need to start thinking about work and finding a place to live etc...

now, being an eu citizen, im assuming there is no problem with me moving to ireland, but what about work etc...do i need a permit? what about tax? arrgh!

anyone know a good way to find work abroad? im a computer hardware/networking tech with about a squillion years worth of experience working with computers. ive done arseloads of tech support (phone and face to face) both for software and hardware.

housing isnt too much of an issue (we can live with her family til we sort ourselves out...)

does anyone have any advice (preferably useful, though silly advice is fun too...)?

thanks!

hahahahahahahahaha.....................bwhahaha.
I pity you.

Now thats out of my system, for work www.fas.ie is excellent, try the job search etc. Also, Intel are always expanding so you could get work their, their located in kildare, just beside dublin. Actually there a lot of comuter related work about so it shouldnt be that hard to find work. Where exactly in Dublin are you moving?

not sure exactly where yet- will most likely be in the city as opposed to co. dublin though.

the gf's folks live in walkinstown i think.

have been looking at renting something right in the middle of town as some of the fully furnished flats look superb! our budget is about a thousand euro a month on rent i suppose (not too bad considering location etc)

Walkinstown aye. Id rather live in some of the surrounding towns, iv never been a fan of the city, full of scumbags. Although im sure its the same im most cities.
I'd make sure you have your job situation down before settling fully in, because it would suck to live in the city centre and have to work out in leixlip or lucan(outside the city) as traffic is absolutely horrible.
For jobs Id recommend www.monster.ie and www.fas.ie they should be useful. Sorry I cant be more useful.

As soon as you arrive you should apply for a PPS number from the tax office.
I don't know what wages are like but if you're used to working for wages in London you probably will be taking a paycut. There's no shortage of tech support workers (thousands of college graduates a year take them and the money isn't great) but if you have higher grade skills you might land a good IT job in Dublin city.

The fact that you have no friends in England (if you're serious!) doesn't really bode well for you, because Irish people can be even worse at picking at people's shortcomings. Some English people just aren't liked in Ireland, they come across as snide and up themselves - there's too much of a cultural gap. Others get on really well and consider the place their second home.

nono- i do actually have friends (lol), just none in exeter- i had to move down here for family reasons (now sorted), but all my friends live up country. i got a job here and ended up staying cos the gf moved in and we were planning to move to dublin anyways...

i already have a bunch of mates in dublin (i met the gf through them), who i go LARPing (live action roleplaying) with several times a year. i even get on well with her dad, and he's famous for not getting on with anyone...so im prob ok with the irish

:D
