Hey all

I'm moving to Edinburgh at the end of August and i'll be renting out my own place.

Does anybody have any recommendations of letting agencies or websites that list places for rent in Edinburgh?

Also i'll be there on Monday for three days getting an idea of the areas and calling into to some letting agencies if I can find any.

Buy an umbrella?

:D

Sorry. Couldn't resist. Every time I go to Scotland, I get rained on. I'm beginning to think it's personal. ;)

As for the actual question, I can't help.

At the moment its SCORCHING hot up here, not sure on places in edinburgh to let out, but im sure you won't be dissapointed when you get here, lots of good pubs/clubs (if your into that) plenty shops etc etc etc.

Basically, any letting agency which looks like its aimed at students will be money grabbing spawn of Satan. Other than that I can't help too much, I had private landlords the whole time I was there.

Yeah I've noticed this so far, mainly just looking at the normal agencies.

Whatever you do avoid 'Alba'. I think that's what it is called. I used it and they were a complete farce, and it was only after using them that a lot of people told me that they were amongst the worst to use. I'm trying to remember the other one we used where one of the reps was a drop dead gorgeous blonde stunner who drove up in a sports car and drove us around 12 different properties while we drooled over her. That was a good day. :D

don't what ever you do, go wiht Grant management. They are useless and even lie in court! Not sure of who else is good as ive only been wiht them and they made my life hell!

Leith is a good palce to look for flats - its a little cheaper but loads of buses! :)

and prostitutes! cant forget the prostitutes! (depending on which part of leith of course) :D

I'm pretty sure they are/were moving the prostitutes out of Leith and have certainly shrunk the tolerance zone, there was a big uproar in the papers because they were moving further up in more 'respectable' areas.

Leith is certainly an area on the up in Edinburgh but I'm not sure I'd be all that keen to live there myself even so. Quite a lively place and good for nights out though by all accounts. The bus service isn't too bad round Edinburgh most of the time(LRT was bus company of the year two times in the past 10 or so although what that says about the rest I'd rather not think ;)). You could even look further down to Portobello way which has some fairly nice properties for rent although never, ever try swimming from the beach unless you have a great desire for a sudden illness and you like used needles/condoms. It really depends on where your job will be what location will be best.

I'm not sure about the best letting agents to go with, I know a few people who have rented out flats they own through agents but none have said any agent stands out particularly so I'd suggest just going with your gut instincts. If you don't like a place walk away, there isn't that much of a shortage of choice.

Morningside is nice, but expensive. There are lots of nice places but also some nasty. Stay away from Westerhales and Niddrie its for the best. The weather in Edinburgh isn't as bad or cold as people are making out. There are lots of good renting agencys in Morningside and on Clark Street.

Well i've got an appointment to view a flat in the Broughton area tomorrow, and also went down to look around the Leith Walk area.

I wasn't so sure about the Leith area, anybody got any opinions on it if it's dodgy or not?
