Moving to HK, advice needed

I'm moving to Hong Kong in September this year and I don't want to plan late.

I've got my passport sorted and will visit the doctor tomorrow and get a copy of my medical records. I will also check with the bank about moving abroad.

Anything else I will need to sort out?

I have a place sorted out. Having just got a degree in Business Info Systems, it shouldn't be too difficult. Girlfriend's family has connections with HSBC and the mum is in property management which should set me up very nicely.

With a Visa, do I get a job first before I can get a Visa or do I need to apply for a travel Visa or something?

If its a regulation by the authority that you need a VISA to enter hongkong, then you should get a travel VISA but i doubt you need one for British passport. When you get a job, apply for the PR (Permanent Resident) card (green in colour) there. And you're safe

From Norwich to HK? Man, are you going to have a shock when you experience that humidity, or have you been before?

Never been there before, so i'll probably have to sit indoors with the AC for the first week.

I'm interested to know what brought this on? If you've never been there before, i mean. It's a pretty big step/chance to move to somewhere you've never been, let alone somewhere like HK where it's an entirely different culture (and obviously language). Do you have a job lined up or something, or is your current job moving you perhaps?

HK is very westernised in places, but at the end of the day it's still Asia!

The girlfriend is from Hong Kong and we've lived together for almost three years in England now and her mum who lives in HK has come down with cancer, so we both agreed we should stay with her through the chemo. It was actually my decision as i'm fed up of England, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity really.

We both have degrees and disposable jobs right now.

I've already started learning Cantonese, but as English is the second language over there, it's not going to be completely different.

Keep in mind that nobody in the slightly more rural areas speaks English, you should be fine if you're staying near the main areas (Lantau, HK Island, causeway bay etc.)
