Moving to Plusnet............

And looking for an alternative fibre router than the rather basic model Plusnet supply: router

Budget is a bit of an issue as I am putting my spare cash aside for a GTX 970 so really looking to spend no more than 50-60 quid if that is possible.

Engineer arrives Fiday so ideally like to have this by then saves me setting it up.

Unless you 'need' some specific feature the plusnet router doesn't provide, you might want to give it a go first, as I've had zero issues with it, wired or wireless.

I've had no issues and cannot complain about the unit. It does what it's meant to do and I get roughly 65mbs down and 19mbs up on 80/20 Unlimited!

Just so you know, the router supplied by plusnet doesn't have VDSL compatibility and you'll need an external VDSL modem which should be supplied by the BTOR engineer when the do the work at your property.

You won't be able to get a router with a VDSL modem built in for £60 since the cheapest over on the OCUK site is a little under £70

The BT engineer will fit one, he did for me.

You may also want to make sure the master socket is easily accessible. Mine had to be moved.

Second question. I already have fibre and would like to switch to plusnet. I already have the btor modem and this connects to my AirPort Extreme. If I switch would I use the same modem or does it contain a username / password or similar?

You should be able to use the same modem.

Been using one of these for several months now with Plusnet Fibre and connected up to a home PC, PS3, PS4, Android M8 TV box and wireless laptop -

No issues and runs very cool. I tried a BT Home Hub 5 for a while, but it kept disconnecting so I chose the Asus instead.

Wow that's a good price. Thanks mate.
I switch on Friday and will gave chat with the engineer see if he has any independent views. But I will probably keep the supplied router and see how it performs before deciding whether to change or not.

For the price it is a cracking router. Bought it last July from Overclockers. At that time it was only £17.99 so thought it was worth trying out.

I used the built in modem with the BT Home Hub and then just used it as a router (bypassing the modem), but it was to unreliable for me.

Not sure I understand can you elaborate?

The BT Home Hub 5 can be used as a modem/router so you don't need to use the supplied Openreach Modem.

The router you get from Plusnet and say the Asus I have needs to be plugged into the Openreach modem.

Hope that makes sense?

Yep got you now. The Asus RT-N12E does not have VDSL compatibility hence using the Openreach modem which I am assuming the engineer will bring with him on Friday?
