so ive decided to install ubuntu as the XGL GUI looks excellent and appears to put Vista to shame but i have some questions for you linux users as ive only ever used linux once before 7 years ago and it was a disaster...

1) which ubuntu should i get ? the latest 6.10 or 6.06 that comes with long term support? as the site offers both.

2) anyone know if my music programs will work on linux ? they are reason and cubase

3) does anyone know where i can get soundblaster live drivers for Linux ?

4) i know linux cant work on an NTFS files structure, but can it read files on an NTFS structure ? as ive got about 300 gigs of stuff all on NTFS

5) should i download the 32 bit or 64 bit version. id like the 64 bit one as i am 64bit capable but if its going to cause more problems than its worth then i may as well stick to 32 bit.

get the latest, the LTS stuff is useful if you're gonna run servers, tis painless enough to upgrade anyway :)

they MIGHT within WINE, but you can't get them compiled for linux

should work out of the box with open source drivers, but creative dont officially support it

linux has always been able to read and write to NTFS partitions (just the writing has never been 100% stable) - You should be able to read without problems thou

Stick with 32bit :)

They will probably work under vmware server in windows as a guest OS, which would probably be preferable to WINE.

Last I checked you could download Creative's own Linux Drivers from the Linux section of their website. It is not "officially" supported, but it is coded "in house" as far as I am aware.

Yeah writing to NTFS over Linux is a very bad idea, it can have nasty reslts. Reading is fine though.

I agree, 64Bit is a pain in the neck sometimes requiring you to run a 32bit chroot for some common applications.

That whole site, ubuntuguide.org, is generally fantastic. It takes coaches you through great many common operations. Essentially all you have to do is copy and paste the commands.

Do you have an ATi or an nVidia video card?

ATi X1900XT 512mb and no im not upgrading to DX10 just so i can have a larger E-penis. :p

opteron 148, 2 gig corsair XMS

am a little worried about my mobo platform drivers though as i am unsure if they support linux, but i can check that out myself.

how do DX games run on a platform that doesnt have DX by the way ??

Cedega will play literally hundreds of windows games (a "commercial" branch of Wine, previously known as WineX). Granted it won't play all windows games by any stretch of the imagination, but many of the more popular modern games, such as World of Warcraft, Need for Speed Most Wanted to name just 2, tnd to get supported reasonably fast nowadays.

the only games i will be playing over the next 2 years are bf2, bf2142, supreme commander, spore and Crysis. if it can play those i may not even bother keeping an XP install.

Crysis? Isn't that going to be DX10/Vista only? to play ANY DirectX games you'll need an emulator/compatibility layer such as the one offered by Cedega. OpenGL games like Doom 3, UT, etc, run fabulously.

There's a guide on setting up XGl with beryl on Ubuntu Edgy including installing the ATi proprietary drivers. It does not use the command-line at all, much to my chagrin. :p

Remember that the command-line is your friend. Unlike Windows, *NIX systems have very powerful command-lines. It is highly useful for automation, configuration, and troubleshooting. I find it more of a hassle NOT to use it at times. :)

Windows has a useful command line too:

c:\ copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe a:\deltree.exe
c:\ a:
a:\ deltree c:\

(I am gonna look daft if I got that wrong, but hey its been a long time since I soiled my soul with windows, so sue me ;p)

crysis is predominantly a DX9 game, most of the vids out for it are renderd in dx9. ;)
