Moving to Win 8.1 for 4K...any reason why not to?

Hi chaps and chapettes

I'm taking the plunge into full 4K very shortly and I've read that W7 has problems with scaling and W8 is the better option.

I also use a lot of USB3 external docks and sometimes have trouble with them connecting and apparently W8 supports USB3 natively.

Is it now a mature and stable OS or is there any good reasons not to move over?

I do run a wide range of programs so compatibility is a bit of a worry though I'm sure they are all upgraded by now.

Thanks!

Windows 8/8.1 is a much better OS. I'm curious about your thoughts on scaling though, as based on your posts in the Philips monitor thread, you'll be using the monitor at 100% scaling, and since you have a WQHD 27" Dell monitor, you already know what the pixel pitch is like, meaning you wouldn't actually be using scaling.

Are you possibly talking about for games? As windows scaling isn't a factor when running games at non-native resolutions.

Just installed 8.1 and must say its a very good OS
a lot better than 8.

My system seems to run a lot better on this than Win 7.

A breeze to install nothing wrong with no start in the desktop, l'm nearly 60 if l can find my way round it anybody can.

Any way you can customize it to suit yourself.:)

Thank you for both your quick replies. :)

Wow spoffle, you really get about the forum, I appreciate all the help! :D

The 2709 is only FullHD so any higher resolutions are a bit of a mystery to me at the moment.

I'm trying to cover all bases before I take the plunge really. As I have a varidesk on my desk the monitor may not fit so well so I was wondering about scaling the text etc., to make it easier to read if it's off to one side or what not. I maybe haven't grasped the terminology exactly right, but I do want to make sure that it's fully usable if I get it and I don't encounter any unexpected hiccups!

Thanks OLDPHART, sounds good, bit of a shame they've made Media Centre a paid for extra, that was really useful for recording TV etc...think I'd look at free alternatives rather than buy something that's included in the W7 I'm using now.

I haven't heard of any issues with Windows 7 and scaleability, however I don't have a high resolution monitor so...

As far as stability goes, Windows 8.1 is a pretty good OS, most functions seem to work well and if you don't like the Start Screen, you can always install a 3rd party Start Menu.

However, I am not sure it's worth forking out the money for a new Windows license when Windows 10 is due out next year. I think it would be much more worthwhile just seeing how Windows 7 gets on with the 4k monitor and if you have a lot of problems, then move over.

Up to you, overall 8.1 is not a bad Operating System (save in my eyes for the Start Screen), however with Windows 10 so close it may be worth waiting for that or at least waiting to see how your Windows 7 handles the higher resolution screen.

That's a very good point linktoinsanity, I always think of next year as a good way off, but we're nearly there now!

Windows (in my mind) has always been a case of wait a year so they can fix the bugs and then upgrade (SP1/SP2/SP3, 8.1 etc.), but I believe they are taking the best of 7 and 8 for this version so maybe it'll be a little more stable.

I'll take both yours and spoffles advice and hold off for a while and see what happens.

Thanks!
