You probably have some dead wood or dead roots under there. Only time I had some is when the creeper got terminated, years later the roots rotted and we got some mushrooms following where the old roots were.

That makes sense, whoever was here before buried so much rubbish that when I was digging up the lawn to level it I found all sorts of junk. Is the only way to remember the spots and dig up to remove what could be causing it? Was hoping my digging days were over!

Thought I'd risk a late scarify and reseed... Wish me luck! Hose pipe still banned but rain forecast. Didn't do the whole lawn only the bad parts (practically the whole lawn )

Literally have not checked on it since but after 11 days (which is pretty good for Fescue/Bent?) we have progress!!!
