Mowing the lawn

Finally done just a long cut. It's a right state.
Guess it's still too early to put seed down. Might try one of those hollow aerator things, though my dad always just used to stick a garden firm in and wiggle it around to make bigger holes.

Yeah you need to gain height or your simply compacting another part even more, you also need to do when lawn is wet/damp
Thing is to make a material difference your talking what 15-20 secs per fork, sod that unless you have a tiny garden

When I cored mine for the first time last year it took probs 30 mins coring so each spike was like 5-6cm from the next (they are spread that sort of distance along the aerator so I moved it that far each time giving a grid
I was surprised how quickly the core holes closed back up, a sign of high compaction I guess as there was almost pressure to fill in the holes

Plan to recore but with larger gaps this year. In fact maybe later today as after the first cut the grass is growing like mad

Actually had a good look at the surface yesterday and far less moss than in other years despite a wet gloomy winter so I really am a coring convert, it clearly improved my lawns ability to drain.
 
Front and upper rear lawns are amazing already, thick, dark green and weed free.

Lower rear isnt a lawn. It's a moss.

And should you brush sharp sand into the holes.
 
I can see my grass needs cutting again, but I’ll have a run around the bits my ride on mower can’t/wont get to with the strimmer.

It’ll be a good first test of the Echo Speedfeed line head I picked last month as I’m done with winding line onto the Stihl line head every 30 minutes.
 
I have managed to get out in bursts to keep it somewhat in check since the winter deluge ended. Have to service the ride on and top up the battery now the ground is sturdy.

I installed drainage in mine. 2 inch channelled pipe at 800mm intervals. Since then i've also been working at building in more organic materials.

It's solved some of the issues however I'd love to know how you get on with liquid gypsum. Some people do report good success.
 
The local cat, which is on good terms with us, has decided that the recent scarified lawn patches are perfect cat box material. I suspect that the cat may find some difficult netting put up to prevent it from squatting on the lawn.

Cat pee is not as bad as dog pee but will kill off grass.. so I think given the number of times it's peeing that action will be taken tomorrow..
 
Got a quick first mow in at lunch today and the whole thing looks awful. Next job is to level properly and re-seed!

Any tips welcome, first time I’ll be doing it.
