Mowing the lawn

I think I may have found a solution for the cat and the lawn "Scaredy Cat":

In short the plant whiffs and both cats and dogs avoid it. So I think I'll probably get a 6 plug and plant them in the garden borders, steal a few leaves and leave them around the lawn in the problem area.

I’m trying my best to make our garden a lot better this year but I’m in the impatient waiting for grass to grow from seed stage, sprouting nicely now I’m sure I’ll have to over seed in places though.

Can’t wait to cut it hopefully in 3-4 weeks. Weeds are starting to come through though so I’m thinking I should have done that first? Once established just chuck some feed and weed down or is there are a better option?

Embrace the cats
Get some catnip plants and have chilled out cats thinking your garden is great and they will poop etc in your neighbours ;)

The cat already has a spot on the lawn she's decided to sit - it's just under a bush and tree where birds tweet away and it' like a TV to her. Also there's a mouse run under the fence there, so she's mesmerised by it.

Gave it a little lawn food earlier, it's long enough since the scarify that it will help get thet roots growing and the plants stronger.

Still waiting - the cold for the new species of grass means it's slow. I'll re-seed too soon, perhaps next week.

We have some outdoor plants planted, but they're not making any signs of sprouting yet.

Had a decent ground frost here this morning.... Still way too cold to seed. Will be May by the looks of it now.

I had the perfect opportunity a few weeks ago. Warm weather, ground drying etc. Mowed the lawn low, scarified, started coring and had all the bits ready. It wasn't due to rain for another 5 days then I got a bloody ear infection which floored me for 3 days and by the point I was well enough to do physical tasks it was well into the working week and time had run out. Now it's cold, wet and miserable most of the time with the odd day of sunshine.

I'm thinking the same. What prep can I do in the meantime or should I just keep cutting and then do it all in one go?

No point in putting weed and feed down?

I want to oversees with Bent Fescue as discussed previously.

No reason not to put feed down but I wouldn't do anything that has weedkiller in it. Although it will be designed for broadleaf plants (grass is narrow), it can hinder germination as the seeds/seedlings are so young.

For Bent/Fescue, you are wanting your soil temps to be above 10°C (preferably around 15°C for Bent - SOIL TEMPS FORECAST (enter your postcode and look at the "soil temp" column)

My soil temps are all showing around 5°C for next few days:(

Thanks - I have some iron sulphate, shall I give that a go? Instead of weed and feed. Temp is around 8 in the coming weeks, I'm happy to wait and do prep work now.

Edit - just checked by having a search, it seems like iron sulphate is a good option in my situation. There is some moss at the back of the garden too.

The planted seeds have sprouted over the last few days as I've been away. Must be enjoying the warmth.

I'll get around to putting some more down soon too.

Aldi have a centre aisle scarifier for £59.99.

I have not used it, just putting it out for information.

It's been cut today again and it's looking so **** in places, patchy and weedy  I also tried to manually push in one of those hollow tine tool and got stuck about half way in, tried oiling it etc to no avail. Manually dug a few weeds out with a hand fork and couldn't get that in far either.

So this means the soil is compacted, lawn is thin, bare in places, there is moss at the back, weeds and patches of rye...

Think I might pay some **** to sort it. Or leave it. I've spent far too much time on it over the years.

Probably worth getting a professional to come in, but have them walk you through precisely what they're going todo.

I'll give it a week for the new shoots to get established before stomping around on it. then I'll put in some more seeds. We have a cold snap too for a week.
