As per title - what do people use?

I'm looking for one which will just scan the directory, and create all the relevant artist and album directories, and rename all the mp3s automatically.

Preferably freeware as well :)

Anyone know of one?

Cheers

Creative have software that does this, I run it on my music folder and well it ****** everything up and mixed all the albums and artists up and now I can't find any songs without having to load up winamp to search for the song and then locate it, nothing but trouble!

It sounds like you're after miracle software.

Tbh I think the description was pretty clear. Maybe it doesn't exist but it wouldn't actually be too difficult to code... might do it as a side project at some point.

Musicbrainz being miracle software in that case :) Brillian application, I don't know how it works so well but it just does.

So in other words I have a directory full of random MP3's and you're telling me MusicBrainz will identify them all, stick them in their own directories and rename all the MP3's automatically?

I can only see this working if -
1 - All the files have been tagged
or
2 - If all the files are named with the artist and song title

MusicBrainz picard does appear to do this. Musicbrainz is great for untagged or partially tagged mp3's. Picard expands on this and seems to provide support or clustering into albums. However no idea on the album artwork.

Well obviously I'll not call you thick, but yes it does indeed do what was asked for above :) In fact this thread reminded me about it, I run it every 6 months or so to keep my collection in order.

So like I said above the files must be either -
1 - Tagged or partially tagged
or
2 - The filenames must be correct.

If you had a directory with MP3 files eg
01 Enter Sandman.mp3
02 I Am The Law.mp3
03 Seasons In The Abyss.mp3

and these files weren't tagged then theres no way on this planet that any software would be able to put them into their proper directories which are Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer. The files have to be tagged or named correctly.
The OP didn't mention if his files are tagged or are correctly named.
I see this all the time especially with people who have Apple products and don't know about tagging.

Thanks for all the advice guys. The one that worked the most effectively from the list above was Musicbrainz, but it still seemed a bit dodgy to get used to.

I ended up spending an hour writing one in C#, which did all the requirements I originally specified. Took just over 5 minutes to clean up my entire music library. :)

Let me know if anyone wants this or wants to expand upon it, and i'll post the sourcecode.

Regards,
Rich

tag&rename

i used it for cleaning up all my music

can scan for id3 tags and edit the file/names for you (might create folders i did them manually before hand)

can scan file/folder names to create id3 tags

very good software, runs standalone too, i registered it, and now it just runs off my mp3 player when i want to use it (on any pc :) )

All of my .mp3 files are named "artist - track" with no tags. Is there a way to automatically create the tags from the filenames?

if it can add the year and genre etc. even better!

Tag and Rename can, not sure if any others do this also? I tried the demo of Tag and Rename and then stopped looking for anything else.
Also it can look up mp3s with no tags via online and tag them for you.

MP3 Tag Studio is also very good, and free.

Includes common options like tag from filename, filename from tag etc...
Allows & recognizes different seperators also, and allows you to specify the filename format. I suspect i have only scratched the surface as there are many advanced options which i have yet to use.

Never had a problem with Creative software (playcentre, mediasource). In fact the latest Mediasource is very good IMO. Its probably not an "enthusiast" player, but the missus finds it easy to use, so it has to stay :D

What has happened to the Library in WMP 11 btw
