As the title says really.
I've been swimming for a few weeks now, had to take a break due to stubborn athletes foot which also caused an infection .

So i went back in on Monday and discovered that I'm really really bored, so I was thinking about getting an MP3 player. Can anyone recommend a model?

Sony Walkman W273

Available for £50 and comes as an all-in-one so need to secure it anywhere other than on your head. I have one myself which has so far only been used for running and cycling and it stays in place pretty well, is easy to control, lightweight and comes with three sets of little ear buds for what suits you best. It also charges very quickly and lasts for a claimed 8 hours which I would say is about right by my use so far.

I do have plans to use mine in the water when I start swimming again and I imagine it'll be pretty decent for the purpose. It is only 4GB though if that's a problem and no way of selecting songs easily (think iPod Shuffle) but for what it's designed for I wouldn't expect that anyway.

One problem I have is that the ear buds do seem to come out of my ears a little easily at times but I'm not sure if that's just because I'm using the wrong buds or a potential issue for everyone. That being said I'd still buy this knowing that issue anyway.

Hmmm, having actually read a few more reviews (three from Google first page) then I've decided I can't recommend them for swimming as it seems unless the seal between the buds and your ear is watertight then the sound quality isn't very good.

Part solution. Get yourself one of those waterproof pouches, there about a tenner, they work a treat, i have/use one.

Any mp3 player goes, just a case of sourcing waterproof headphones, which is a far easier/cheaper thing to hit and miss on.
