I want to buy a large portable mp3 player soon with intention of plugging it into a suitable HU to control it like a CD changer.

so far, all I can find are iPod interfaces.

do other manufacturers support such a thing or am I stuck with ipods?

Not that I'm aware of.

Which isn't a great loss as ipod's are a fantastic :)

You'll be able to plug any mp3 player into a HU using a phone jack but this won't have any interface obviously (and there'd be a drop in quality).

There is a Sony MP3 interface from Connects2 that works with Sony CD changer controls. I personally do not understand why Sony headunits dont have the functionality TBH. Seems like a stupid thing not to do when they build both devices themselves.

there wont be any loss of quality if you get a cd changer to phono jack adapter, thats all the ipod ones use anyway

ipods may be fantastic but

a) battery life
b) i use linux
c) itunes

are my reasons against

You can buy head units with SD card slots and you can also buy mp3 players which use SD cards for the music...possibilly a solution?

a) Can't say I've ever had a problem with the battery life but when you connect it to your HU it charges it at the same time so that's fine.

b) I guess is a problem, dual boot? Won't this be a problem with most mp3 players?

c) Not sure why you hate itunes, very easy to use etc yes it does use a bit of resources when it's running but all you need to use it for is adding tunes etc? Plus there are hundreds of other application you can download and use instead of itunes, maybe even for linux?

You can control Sony MP3 players from many car HUs, just need to buy a £50 cable :)

You can, but all you'll be doing is skipping individual tracks, and when you have over 5000 songs, it could take a while :p Ipod interfaces you can search using Playlists/Album/Artist etc etc

ipod HU's don't use a phone jack to connect, it plugs in where the charger does :)

I used this mod and one of these to connect up my IPOD to my P77MP Pioneer headunit.
Even wired in a voltage regulator (12v -> 5v) and soldered a USB female socket to the end so it charges it as well as playing the music.

Drilled a small hole in my glovebox - wired it through - job done. I now open my glove box to reveal a IPOD cable/connector that charges and outputs sound to my headunit.
