I bought a cheap £11 512 mp3 player a while back. I like to go to sleep listening to music on one of the quietest settings, the only trouble is is that i can hear an irritating buzzing sound.

Are all mp3 players like this or is it just because i bought a cheap one, pay for what you get.
I have put my music on it using the highest quality setting in media player.

I started off with a cheap 256MB USB stick MP3 player and the quality was okay but it had a horrible interface and poor battery life. Since then I've been using iPods, I'm on my fourth (mini -> nano -> 2G nano -> 3G nano), the quality is good and interface is dead easy to use, never had a problem with any of them. I know they aren't cheap but you get what you pay for, it was one of my best investments as I listen to podcats when I go to bed and it is ideal to take with you when you're travelling.

No that's a sensitivity issue, if headphones are more sensitive (dB) then the noisefloor is also amplified. Compared horn speakers (which are generally high sensitivity) to standard speakers, with a stereo amp that has a high noisefloor. The horns will have louder hiss, even with the amp right down to minimum.

Using phones with lower sensivity will have less hiss but it means setting the volume higher to get the same level. Comparing my Grado to a set of Beyer DT231, I had to set the volume at full to get similar levels at 50% on my Grados.
