So, I've had a Google around and before trying various products I want to check there is not some gem of an application that I should use.

Simple really.

My MP3 storage area is a mess.
I will soon be synchronising my MP3 onto Flash Drive for in-car use
I want something to go through it all and dump it into Artist based folders

Failing that, something that can show me all my MP3s based on ID3 Tag info so I can sort it and move it around manually.

Any ideas?

Best way to do it i found was to do it manually!... its a Faff!.. but at least you know its gonna be correct!..

then when I Rip my CD's I make sure EAC/Winamp etc.. are set to rip to:

*User*\Music\*Artist*\*Album*\Track No - Track Name.mp3

Keeps it nice a tidy then! :)

Assuming your ID3 tags are correct, load your collection up into foobar2000, select everything, right-click > File Operations > Move to...

Destination folder: (pick any root folder you want)

File Name Pattern: %album artist%\%album%\%filename%

or if you don't want "album" subfolders, just: %album artist%\%filename%

Move entire source folder content: check

Remove empty source folders: check

Hit "Run", and then you're done. :)

All this presupposes your ID3 tags have the right information, at least the "artist" field - if not, the results could be, errmm, unpredictable...

I've just discovered MP3Tag, which as the name suggests is a freeware MP3 tagger. It also does album art, and file renaming based on tag info etc. If all your MP3's are in one folder, like mine, set MP3Tag's home folder to your top level MP3 folder, and it scans the whole subdirectory for music files, lists them, and from there you have a great view of what's what.

This and Foobar2000 above may be the perfect solution...

Coupled with the latest IMGBurn, my MP3's are now sorted and easily burnable with CD text for free...:D
