MP3's on OS X

I've just bought a MacBook (my first ever Mac, so I'm completely n00b) and want to know the best way to manage MP3's on OS X.

What I want to do is play my MP3's on my MacBook which are stored on my PC and access them over the network. I have about 100GB of MP3's. I'd prefer to use iTunes as it works really well with the Apple remote and looks fancy.

I've tried to install iTunes and add the MP3's to my iTunes library by drag and dropping (ensuring to check the option NOT to copy the files over in the preferences) and after doing that, iTunes runs absolutely dog slow. I would have thought it wireless would have enough bandwidth to do that, but maybe I'm wrong.

Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone know of any other software which will enable me to do this?

That's what I'm doing, however when adding the MP3's over the samba share and playing them in iTunes it takes 2-3 secs to change a track, and sometimes iTunes stops responding altogether and I have to force quit.

Can you share them over iTunes? I'm assuming I'd need to install iTunes on my PC and then I could share it over the network? Does that use direct IP or would I need to use samba? I'll have a play, I hadn't thought of doing that, thanks :)

Yes, you can install iTunes on your PC and by default it shares your music. You should then see a "Shared Library" playlist thingy on your Mac iTunes. Not tried it myself so let us know how you get on.

I don't think it shares by default anymore. Methinks you'll have to enable it in preferences. If the OP is feeling adventurous he could set aside an old machine and run a mt-daapd server on it as I do. I now have a dedicated music server with an HTTP interface and it's wonderful. :)
