Are MPEG 4 and divx the same thing? and what about xvid? Is that just a different type of mpeg4? How about AVI (I always though divx and xvid were avi)?

I'm getting slightly confused

They are all avi's, thats just the type of file. MPEG4 and divx are the types of codec used.

Just to confuse matters you can also have .mpg files

thanks.

So just because a player can read an MPEG-4 file doesn't necessarily mean it will read divx or xvid, even though they are all AVI files?

Mpeg-IV is generally classed as Divx and Xvid, but some features can trip over DVD-Video players. With a PC this isn't a problem.

Just install FFDSHOW and it'll work.

'most' xvids and divx's on the net will play ok in a standalone player, if its really jerky then you might need to use mpeg modifier to unpack the stream.. you just click open, select avi, untick 'packed' and click save avi, takes about 3 mins

i think you can also use fourcc to trickt he player into thinking its a real divx file to force it to play ok

wait for more replies..

the mpeg modifier did the trick for me on LOADS of files..
