I looked on the sticky list of apps and did a search but i havent been able to find a piece of software that can successfully convert an mpeg2 file to a standard .avi. Tried a few programs but they either made the .avi so you had to have the xvid codecs to play it, or just didn't work.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good piece of FREE software for this task? I need to convert the files to a standard .avi format as the PC that will be playing them will not have any additional non-standard codecs installed.

There is no such thing as a standard avi format. Avi is a container for many different types of video formats. Just install codecs on the pc they are to be played on. The only format you could convert it to that would play on any windows pc is wmv.

I reccomend avidemux.

oh ok cheers for the info.

I'm basically writing a powerpoint presentation and trying to include videos in it (which are currently in the form of mpeg2). I will taking the presentation on a memory stick and playing it on a random PC so I won;t know if it will have the correct codecs to play the video files. Would wmv be the best then in this case?
