MPG Issues 306 GTi-6's

Its a highly strung naturally aspirated 2.0l engine, its not going to be that economical.

Again with the MPG questions though.

EDIT: Seems they get 30MPG combined, I wouldn't call that rubbish for these engines at all.

Let me guess, you want a quick car but you also want 45mpg? Just get a diesel if it concerns you so much.....

[edit] Parkers says 30mpg combined, is that way way off the mark or something? Doesn't sound bad at all! Also says 0-60 is 8.5, surely not? Didn't someone say they get 6.7 out of theirs?

If you want a sporty car, unless you do down the awful route of diesel :p then the MPG will be much of a muchness.

Get a 306 Diesel, or TurboD. It'll have better fuel economy (my 1.9 diesel ran at about 45mpg on curising motorways at 70), you won't get power in one though, or atleast not that much at all. You can throw them at anything and eerything and come out girnning on the other side though :D

Just get the GTi-6, or buy one, and give it to me if you are really fussed about economy :D

I've actually just realised.

Say if I got a GTi for £2000-£2500 and sold my Saxo for £3000 then i'd have £500 to put towards the insurance plus what I earn during the summer.

I won't be a lot worse off having a GTi then will I?

Is that 30mpg, 6th gear, 70mph on the motorway?

It is not very good really. I looked at the GTi-6 when I wanted a replacement for my 16vGTE Astra. Even with my leadfoot it wasn't hard to get 40mpg out of the Astra and it rarely fell below 35mpg unless I was really abusing it. I guess that'll be the extra 200kg it has to lug around.

Anyone know of a low mileage, really clean 16v GTE for sale? I miss it.

No doubt tyres will cost more, it will cost more to put right when it goes wrong and its older that your car, so odds of it going wrong are no doubt increased.

6th Gear is like any other cars 5th, because they are close ratio boxes. You will get below 30mpg if you drive the car how its meant and you WILL because its to hard not too. I get about 28 on average. If you want MPG, then the 6 is not the car for you.

I'm looking at 1998 R/S reg GTi's with 80k on the dial.

These going to be bad news? (reliabillity)

(90% have FSH)

Like anything you buy it all depends on the car, some are lemons are arn't.

It's mainly electrical things that go wrong with 306's though isn't it?

Heh, do your research, especially on cambelts on the 6 :) They need changing every 35k and the tensioners as they are a weakness. If they go, the head cylinders are notorious to tap afterwards, even after full top end rebuilds.

Well £1080 TPFT for a GTi on 10 months bonus.

£700 TPFT the Saxo would be if I kept it.

200 miles a week @ 86.9p a litre would cost how much in a Saxo at 35mpg and a GTi at 25?

I'm starting to think maybe a VTS would be a good option but the Saxo is a bit too small.

I do pure town driving, short journeys which is pretty much the worse type for MPG and I get 24/25mpg on a run you can get in the 30's easily. :)

Generally accepted figures for the GTi6 is 7.2sec to 60mph, not 8.5sec.

A VTS would be cheaper, there's no denying that, but as you said they're too small. It'll stick with a GTi6 in a quick dart to 60mph but after that the GTi6 should pull away. Similary whilst rolling the GTi6 should pull away. VTS's are very capable though as I'm sure you know.

CAMBELT CAMBELT CAMBELT. A 80k engine should be due it's 2nd cambelt change. Unless there's evidence then get it done - around £350.

Well yes, but I'm baised :p

As long as they've been looked after they're fine (like most cars). Whilst I know mine is newer and lower miles I can honestly say that mine has never missed a beat in the two and a half years I've had it. :)

You may remember that I was considering selling up and buying a boring TDi Bora, needless to say I knocked that idea on the head as soon as I jumped back in mine after driving the Bora for a few days :D (Still fancy something different though).

Take it you've been reading on www.306gti6.com
