Word is beginning to trickle down to fitbabits HQ from several independent sources that Microsoft has all but completed the purchase of Capcom. I'm not going to spell out the ramifications if this one is true, but I will mention two words and a number - Resident Evil 5

More as it becomes available...

Note that this is firmly in the rumor category and that's where it will stay until either Microsoft or Capcom confirm or deny it.

Huge Ramifications if true...

Resident Evil
Devil May Cry
Megaman
Okami
Onimusha
God Hand

All 360 exclusive?

Just as long as they make a second Dead Rising I don't mind who owns them :D

It has been rumoured for a few months that Microsoft were trying to buy Capcom but I think those rumours were denied weren't they?

I don't think it would be good for the industry as a whole. Great for me owning a Xbox360 but Capcom has always produced good games on all systems and the last thing we need is for Microsoft, Nintendo & Sony to start buying up all the well established game developers that have produced games for all consoles in the past

I'm starting to think this one may be true. There was a lot of hot air about a 'super secret that would rock the gaming world' yesterday and the day before and nothing came of it. This could have been that rumour.

With success for Dead Rising and now Lost Planet it makes a lot of sense. Why pay a lot of money for Dead Rising 2 exclusivity and Resident Evil / DMC same day releases when you can just buy the whole kit and kaboodle and guarantee 100% exclusivity.

I'm not MS would stop production of all non MS games, they'd be foolish to ignore the DS-Lite market and even Wii? Or maybe they're thinking ahead to the Zune...

i hope it is true TBH, be nice for a change for MS to have a nice exclusive deal with a major games company, after all Sony has done it for years and if MS is really going to pull the rug from under Sony's feet then this is what they need to do.

Whereas I hope it isn't. Capcom, Nintendo and Sega have been working together for years. For Microsoft to buy up such a large and influential company would be gutting if all Capcom games went MS exclusive. :(

I don't think it's ever good for any console manufacturer to purchase a 3rd-party.

Capcom seem like they're in trouble. They recently shut down the studio that produced Okami and God Hand.

I'd rather they were bought my Microsoft than had to downsize further.

but why do they have to OWN them to get games?

if MS buys out all the developers, effectively creating a 1 horse race i dont see that as a good thing. for instance, check out the OS market. is that what you want to happen to console gaming too? i dont really want MS to own gaming, which they inevitably will if they simply buy out their competitors and lock down everything to a single platform. i dont see how the "consumer" will benefit from that?

Maybe I am misreading your post? are you asking how this will benefit MS, or the consumers?

Gaming industry as a whole. If ms buys every games developer out there....then what?

Dont see it happening, but if they did buy Capcom whos to say any one will care, People might just go some where else for their games leaving ms with a unprofitable company.

I highly doubt that TBH

Resident Evil
Devil May Cry

Those are two of the biggest game franchises there are and I doubt that would change no matter who owns Capcom.

If this is true, and I don't think for one minute it is, it could spell the end for Sony in the gaming industry.

I don't see why it would be a bad thing for one company to tie up most of the exclusives, after all, Sony have had it their way since the PS1 took off. All we would is Microsoft dominating console gaming instead of Sony.

But like I said, I refuse to believe this is true unless it's confirmed by M$ & Capcom.

Yeah thats what i dont understand one console has already been dominating for ages and no one seems to have issues when its like that but now theres another player in it and they are doing the same its seen as wrong

No doubt the same thing was said about sony at the time, and they managed what they have and now a new comer in terms of gaming MS has come along and upped the ante which means surely other exclusives will have to be better to make it worth while for all.

ile for all.

yes but MS are of uch a magnitude that perhaps no-one wil be able to remove their stranglehold of digital content in the household?

PC's linked to XBOX360 through vista etc. they are locking the consumer in, and potentially cornering the market.

How much innovation do you see in MS office each year? or in many of MS's products? remove sony from the equation, and what are you left with?
