I keep getting a load of marketing stuff asking if I want to reserve a free copy of Windows 10, but reading between the lines I am unsure
if this has to upgrade my existing Win 7 installation, or if it can be installed to a wiped hard drive (on the same motherboarded machine as Win 7 is on), but leaving Win 7 alone?

I am happy to try it, but definitely not happy to overwrite a stable OS with all my apps set up on it. I have yet to see an upgrade work as well as a fresh install, anyway!

The situation is as clear as mud in the blurb.

Thanks.

If only there was a massive Windows 10 thread where this question is being asked 3 or 4 times a page...

:p

But to answer your query, its an Upgrade of your Windows 7 license. It won't delete you apps, but you can't have both your 7 installation and a 10 installation on a separate drive. To do that you would need to buy a new 10 license

Ahh, OK, that thread is so massive I only glanced through it and did not spot a similar question, apologies ;)

I won't be upgrading in that case, how the hell do I now stop MS pestering me now I said reserve a copy....? :(

Remove the Windows Update with it in. KB3035583 I think.

Just so you know though, this is a free upgrade to Windows 10 that is only on offer for a year. After the end of July 2016 if you want to get Windows 10 it will cost you (somewhere in the region of $150ish). So while you may not want it now, I'd suggest you consider it within the next 12 months.
