Possible Microsoft Handheld?
Rumors swirl on a PSP/iPod competitor.
by Jonathan Miller

January 26, 2006 - In an effort to loosen Apple's stranglehold on the portable media device market, Microsoft may be contemplating throwing a new device into the fray; one that would most likely include gaming.

Xbox chief Peter Moore told Business Week that a new Microsoft device would most likely incorporate music, video and gaming, the latter of which the iPod doesn't support. The device, then, would also butt heads with Sony's Playstation Portable and fall into a category all its own.

"It can't just be our version of the iPod," Moore said in the interview.

The fact that Moore commented at all could indicate that the Xbox brand would be used to market the device. Back in 2004, it was rumored that Microsoft was developing a handheld called the "Xboy."

"I think the brand is an opportunity," Moore told Business Week.

Microsoft would not comment on the device and even if one is in development, but a representative did say, "Microsoft is committed to innovation." The software giant has shifted focus to increase its presence in entertainment fields, and an iPod/PSP competitor would fall in line with that shift.

Obviously a Microsoft handheld raises a lot of interesting questions. Will it be compatible with the Xbox 360 or even the Xbox? HD? Online? Again, aside from Moore's comments, Microsoft is keeping silent.

Seems the obvious move for Microsoft if they do make the move to a handheld games console....I'd be interested to see what they could come up with but i don't think they could challenge Nintendos strangehold on the gaming handheld side of things.....The PSP however, maybe but i'm sure Sony are working on a follow up to that already.....

I never heard the so called "XBoy" rumours going around that IGN claim but seriously........XBoy?......Please no :o

I am sure if they will eventually get a handheld out and its bound to be good. How could it not be with all those resources going into developing it.

it's suprising how often money and resources get thrown at something and the end result is a product no one wants, and no one will buy ;)

Look at the N-Gage, in theory it could have done very well, mobile phone users want more gadgets and played java games etc on existing handsets, yet it still failed miserably because it tried to be too many things at once, and was very ugly.

It would be interesting to see what MS could come up with, but I wouldn't want to bet on it catching on, or selling well (about the only advantage MS would have would be that they could do what they did with X-Box and not care if they don't even break even on it for 5 years).

If they dont do it within 12 months - and I mean actually have an impending release date, I think they will struggle ( unless of course as stated above they know it wont make profit at all and just do 1st gen test run as it were)

It sounds like a good and obvious choice for them, but if anything they will only compete with psp with Xbox Mobile 2 ( please not "xboy") against psp2 imho

the other difficulty is of course their problem with dealing with back compatability - i never got to the bottom of what happened regarding xbox software working on x360's and how this was settled with nvidia /ati?
